Trump blames vandals for Reflecting Pool algae bloom

Trump blames – President Donald Trump blamed vandals for algae troubles at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after a $16 million renovation, while officials confirmed law enforcement is investigating. The algae issue, however, has appeared repeatedly in the pool’s history
The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool still looks green—despite a costly overhaul—forcing a fight not just over water quality, but over blame.
On June 19. President Donald Trump used a Truth Social post to defend the administration’s beautification work in Washington. D.C. while pointing to an algae bloom that has made the renovated pool appear green instead of blue. The pool sits between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. and in recent days visitors have watched it shift in color after the reopening tied to the renovation.
Trump said his team had “cleaned. renovated. and beautified over 45 monuments and memorials 28 statues and 22 fountains in Washington. D.C.” before turning to the specific problem at the reflecting pool. He wrote that “some real problems with vandalism” have emerged at the pool. and claimed vandals “destroyed the grass outside of the Pool” and “done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.”.
He also argued that the damage involved chemicals, writing that “No different than the chemicals that were used on the National Mall, they used something similar in the reflecting pool to try to destroy and demean our beautiful work.”
Trump said the algae is “75% gone,” adding that the condition “will soon be completely remedied,” and that “the area that was vandalized, fortunately, is just a small area of damage, and will be fixed early next week.”
Behind the president’s explanation is an active investigation. Law enforcement is investigating the vandals issue, Trump confirmed.
Algae has been a recurring problem long before this renovation. Historical reporting tied to a prior overhaul described the pool turning into an “icky sea of algae” about a week after a $34 million renovation in 2012. and workers were seen skimming the surface in the end nearest the World War II Memorial. The Department of the Interior has also said algae blooms have plagued “every pool reopening since 1922.”.
Warm conditions can help algae spread quickly, adding another layer to the dispute over what’s driving the current bloom. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said algae can multiply rapidly when water is warm and sunlight is present. In this case, the algae bloom in the Lincoln Memorial pool began to appear by June 11.
Weather in the Washington area had the kind of heat that can accelerate the problem. Temperatures in the DC area soared to 92 degrees on June 10, for the second time during the month, according to National Weather Service records. By June 12, the temperature reached a high of 100 degrees.
Rain also came during the same window. Nearly a tenth of an inch of rain fell on June 10 and June 12—conditions that can contribute to algae blooms in pools and ponds. The CDC has said nutrients that feed blooms can be blown in or carried in through particles that run off paved surfaces when it rains.
Taken together. the timeline the public can see—the pool turning green soon after renovation and then changing color as it’s managed—sits uncomfortably close to the environmental conditions that repeatedly help algae grow. Trump’s account points to intentional tampering. while the pool’s longer history and the weather pattern suggest algae may also be rooted in basic conditions that have affected the site for decades.
For now. the immediate focus remains whether the remaining algae can be eliminated and whether the damaged areas can be repaired on the schedule Trump cited for early next week. Law enforcement investigation is ongoing as the debate over what happened inside the pool—and what. if anything. was deliberately done—continues in public view.

Green pool means they failed the renovation lol.
So are they saying vandals did the algae? Like I thought algae just happens when water’s not balanced. But sure, blame whoever fits the headline.
They say “75% gone” like that’s a normal progress update. Also why do these monuments always end up looking gross after “$16 million”?? If vandals did chemical stuff, where’s the proof.
Honestly this is why I don’t trust DC water projects. First it’s blue, then it’s green, then they say vandals ruined the grass outside?? I mean the reflecting pool is literally fed by stuff… could it be the same chemicals from the Mall? Not saying it’s not sabotage, but algae shows up forever so this story feels convenient. “Soon be completely remedied” like last time, right?
