Trump blames vandalism as Reflecting Pool paint peels

Trump blames – President Donald Trump said vandalism is behind damage to the renovated Washington Monument area Reflecting Pool, pointing to peeled paint and harmed landscaping—but offered no substantiating details as agencies responsible for upkeep did not respond.

Washington’s Reflecting Pool looked unfinished in the most visible way: paint peeling from a renovation that was meant to last.

The problem was there Friday night. when President Donald Trump posted on his social media site that “someone” had “destroyed” the site—alleging vandalism without providing details. “We’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool,” he wrote. “Just like three days ago. they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool. they’ve also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.”.

He did not offer evidence to back up the claim.

Several agencies tied to law enforcement and maintenance on the National Mall—the U.S. Park Police, the National Park Service and the Interior Department—did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump’s allegations came as attention swelled over the pool’s condition. The Washington Post reported that Park Police officers arrested someone on Friday whom they said was peeling paint from the pool. But that account did not match the full picture of what observers had described: swaths of loose blue paint detached from the bottom. along with algae that had turned the water green.

Trump insisted the situation was driven by something more deliberate than neglect. “No different than the chemicals that were used on the National Mall, they used something similar in the Reflecting Pool to try to destroy and demean our beautiful work,” he posted on Truth Social.

The reference was to the discovery of large numbers etched in discolored grass on the National Mall the week before: “86 47.” Authorities said the numbers could have been meant as a threat to Trump. the 47th president. The number 86 can be slang for “getting rid of.” The matter is under investigation.

The claims landed after days of negative attention to the pool’s condition—an issue Trump himself had elevated by pushing for a renovation. He made a point of rehabbing the Reflecting Pool ahead of the America 250 celebrations, spending more than $14 million for the work.

That investment was followed quickly by an algae bloom that returned the water to a greenish color he had tried to replace by having the bottom painted “American flag blue.” Federal workers later treated the pool with chemicals to kill the algae. After that treatment, chunks of the blue paint were gone, leaving its rocky bottom exposed.

What came next was a political argument over who—or what—caused the damage: Trump pointed to vandalism and implied chemical sabotage, while the visible state of the pool also reflects algae-related breakdown after the renovation and subsequent chemical treatment.

  1. Wait so the paint is peeling and Trump says vandalism… but where’s the proof? Also “someone” is doing all that multiple days in a row? Feels convenient tbh.

  2. I read that they arrested someone for peeling paint but the water being green and all that algae thing doesn’t really mean vandalism to me? Like could be chemicals or the renovation just failing. Trump always jumps to sabotage.

  3. This is why I don’t trust any “renovation” on the Mall. They always cut corners and then act shocked when stuff falls apart. If it’s really vandalism then why didn’t the Park Service/NPS respond? And what even is “86 47” anyway, that’s like numbers people throw around? Probably some political stunt but the agencies not answering is weird.
