Trump and Meloni trade barbs after Iran and NATO clash

President Donald Trump doubled down on a public fight with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni over a photograph at the G7 summit in France, sharpening a dispute that has been shadowed by disagreements over Iran policy and NATO.
On Saturday, Trump wrote that Meloni was “doing poorly in Italy” and suggested the cause was that she “turned down the United States of America,” a country he said “truly loves and protects Italy,” when it came to “denying Iran from obtaining or developing a Nuclear Weapon.”
Trump also said Meloni repeatedly asked for a photograph with him during the summit. and he claimed she refused U.S. requests to use Italian airfields during military operations against Iran. In his account. he added that Meloni was seeking closer ties with Washington in order to improve her standing at home.
Meloni responded on Friday, dismissing Trump’s claims as false and lashing out at the tone of the exchange. “Neither I nor Italy ever beg,” she said. “Donald Trump’s statements are completely made up. I am frankly astonished.” She said she was disappointed by what she described as Trump’s treatment of U.S. allies and argued he had not shown the same determination toward adversaries of the West and the United States.
The back-and-forth marked a deterioration in relations between the two leaders. arriving just days after signs at the G7 summit suggested the relationship had stabilized after earlier strains connected to the conflict with Iran. Video from the summit showed Trump and Meloni sitting side by side and speaking during the meeting. But Trump later downplayed the interaction in remarks reported by the Italian broadcaster La7. saying he had only “humbled” the Italian leader.
“She’s probably happy I talked to her. I didn’t have to talk to her,” Trump was quoted as saying. In La7’s translation. Trump also said Meloni “begged” him for a photograph and that he agreed because he “felt sorry for her.” The broadcaster aired a dubbed version of the interview and did not release the original audio.
As the anger within Meloni’s government grew, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Friday that he was canceling a planned visit to the United States next week.
The dispute adds to months of friction tied to policy toward Iran and NATO, with Trump repeatedly criticizing allies he says have not provided enough support for U.S. military efforts and defense priorities.
For now. the conversation that started with a photo at the G7 summit has turned into something larger—one leader insisting the other blocked key U.S. requests tied to Iran. the other insisting the entire account is fabricated. and both sides showing how quickly diplomatic cooperation can slip when trust runs thin.

So Meloni just said no to helping with Iran? Ok.
This is honestly like high school drama. I didn’t even realize they were arguing about airfields or whatever, I just saw the photo thing going around.
Wait… is the claim that Meloni denied NATO or denied the US access? Cause NATO vs Iran sounds like one of those articles where they use 3 different words and you’re supposed to pick a side. Also Trump saying she asked for a pic with him is so petty.
I love how Trump says the US “truly loves and protects Italy” while also saying she’s “doing poorly” like that’s normal. If she refused requests, then okay, but why is it all tied to a photo at the G7? Feels like distraction. And the NATO clash part is confusing too, I saw somewhere else it was more about drones or sanctions or something, idk.
