Trump Admin Denies Vance Was Snubbed at Iran Summit

The Trump administration rejected social media claims that Vice President JD Vance was snubbed by Qatari representatives during a major peace-deal summit with Iranian leaders in Switzerland on Sunday. The dispute traces back to an X clip shared by Pamela Gelle

Vice President JD Vance stood beside leaders in Switzerland on Sunday, smiling as nearby officials hugged and kissed each other—then, in a few seconds, the moment looked tense. For many viewers watching an X clip later shared by Pamela Geller, it read like a snub by Qatari representatives.

The Trump administration says that interpretation doesn’t hold up.

Geller posted the video with the caption “Watch Qatar snub Vance,” adding “So embarrassing.” Her clip, posted earlier in the day, racked up 2.1 million views on X and was shared by thousands of accounts.

In the video, Vance is shown standing and smiling while leaders next to him embrace and kiss. As the line of officials forms next to him, Vance appears to look a bit annoyed.

A U.S. official pushed back on that framing in a direct response to the claim that Vance was deliberately ignored during the summit. The official said “The U.S. delegation had just spent hours with the Qataris and there was no need to re-greet someone having just spent hours with.”

The official also described how the summit’s schedule unfolded, saying the decision to deliver statements together before meeting “was done impromptu,” which, the official argued, was why the greeting didn’t play out the way some viewers assumed.

That denial comes as Vance works to help shape a deal involving Iranian representatives and other countries. On Saturday. Vance said. “I’m looking forward to starting the technical talks with the Iranians. the Pakistanis. and the Qataris.” He added that the talks are aimed at “progress on the nuclear issue” and “progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue. ” describing both as “the two big things that I think we’re going to be focused on.”.

This is not the first time Vance has been sent to negotiate with Iranian officials. He traveled to Pakistan in April. appearing alongside special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner. Despite a marathon negotiating session lasting 21 hours, no deal was reached.

The timing of the public spat over body language—hours after a clip that captured one awkward-looking segment of a bigger diplomacy push—underscores how quickly a negotiation can become secondary to optics. In this case. the administration’s message is clear: the video’s storyline doesn’t match how the day’s meetings were managed.

For now, the summit continues to hinge less on what’s visible in a short clip and more on what comes out of the technical talks Vance said he was about to begin—particularly on the nuclear issue and the Lebanon ceasefire.

  1. I saw that X clip going around and yeah it looked weird. But of course the admin is gonna say it was fine… they always do. Doesn’t matter what they say if the vibe looked disrespectful.

  2. Hold up, I thought this was about Iran and nuclear talks not body language. Also people act like kissing and hugging is normal in diplomatic meetings? I’m confused. If they were together for hours then why even bother with the “greeting” part on camera.

  3. So basically they’re saying the “snub” was just scheduling? That seems convenient. The internet saw a moment and now we’re supposed to trust the official explanation instead. Also Vance negotiating with Iranians again… didn’t something like this already happen like last year? Feels like deja vu.
