“Have faith” as Vozinha’s mom watches Uruguay tie

Vozinha’s mom – Ana Candida Evora arrived in Miami on Friday after more than 24 hours of travel and visa hurdles to watch her son, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, help produce a 2-2 draw against Uruguay on Sunday night. With Cape Verde’s run at the World Cup now poised for a k

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — On Father’s Day, the stadium was loud before the first whistle and even louder when Ana Candida Evora finally took her place to watch the match.

There were 64. 003 people inside the venue for the 2-2 draw between Cape Verde and Uruguay on Sunday night. and Evora’s story reached the stands in a way few could match. She is the mother of Vozinha. Cape Verde’s goalkeeper. and she returned to Miami from the island nation of Cape Verde with one clear goal: to see her son play.

Evora arrived in Miami on Friday and reunited with her son over the weekend. She watched Sunday’s game from a suite at Miami Stadium. Cape Verde’s World Cup journey has turned into a feel-good fairytale built on tiny margins—so tiny they can still feel like miracles—and this latest result kept that momentum alive. The team can still reach the knockout stage, depending largely on how it handles its group finale against Saudi Arabia.

Cape Verde entered the match with two draws from its first two games. Vozinha’s presence in the crowd added a level of meaning that reached beyond football. Evora was unable to attend Cape Verde’s opening draw against Spain because she couldn’t obtain a visa.

Sunday brought a different ending. Even though there was no win, and even though Vozinha didn’t even make a save in the game, her presence—and the way he helped shape the closing moments—made the day feel like more than a routine draw.

Goalkeepers don’t always have to stop the ball to matter. Vozinha’s best two plays of the match came in the final stretch. when he was perfectly positioned on a pair of Uruguay scoring chances. He cut down angles and forced shooters to aim at tight spaces. Both shots sailed high. and Vozinha exhaled deeply both times. after holding the line in the moments that could have flipped the night.

Evora’s remarks before the match were distributed by FIFA in a video message. and they landed with a particular weight after what she’d already overcome to be there. “I want to thank all the fans. everyone who helped in the process. for the support you gave to the team. especially to Cabo Verde. ” she said Sunday. “We’re all rooting for Cabo Verde to play well, to shine on the pitch. The players need to have faith and everything will go well.

“Keep your heads held high, go onto that pitch, push for a goal and you’ll perform beautifully, my boys. A kiss for you, be strong and brave. Blue Sharks!”

The team is commonly called Tubarões Azuis in Portuguese, translating to Blue Sharks.

Evora carried a Cape Verde flag into the stadium Sunday. Her shirt had her son’s name and jersey number on the back. Even with a mostly pro-Uruguay crowd. she was ushered into a suite and stayed close to what the tournament delivered most clearly—noise. roars. emotion—when she heard the crowd react whenever Vozinha was shown on the video screens during warm-ups.

He may not have faced the kind of volume that produces saves, but he still got the kind of moment players remember. When the starters were introduced, Vozinha perhaps received the loudest ovation of any player.

The road to Miami had been anything but simple. Evora’s visa issues—especially raising the money needed for one—were worked out after the U.S. State Department, FIFA, U.S. lawmakers and Cape Verde’s soccer federation combined efforts and cleared a path for her to come to Miami. She arrived Friday afternoon after more than 24 hours of travel from Cape Verde and was immediately surrounded by FIFA officials and volunteers as she moved through the airport.

FIFA also hosted her briefly at the organization’s tournament headquarters in Florida over the weekend, officials said Sunday.

For Vozinha. the match came with a spotlight that had been growing since the opening game against Spain. when he helped Cape Verde earn a scoreless draw against one of the tournament’s pretournament favourites to win the title. He grabbed global attention with tearful comments after that match. including his wish that his late grandparents could have seen him play and that his mother’s visa issues had been resolved in time for her to be there.

That reaction turned into immediate action to try to get Evora to the U.S. As that effort gathered momentum, Vozinha’s reach exploded. He had about 50. 000 followers on Instagram as the World Cup was starting; by game time Sunday against Uruguay. he had surged to 15 million followers. The numbers made the pace of the viral moment plain: he gained about 30 followers every second from the end of the Spain match to the start of the one against Uruguay.

And Cape Verde’s soccer story—told through a goalkeeper and his mother, through visa paperwork and stadium noise—brought attention to a team that had arrived as an underdog and is now impossible to ignore.

“It’s been intense,” Cape Verde forward Garry Rodrigues said.

  1. Wait so his mom had to deal with visa issues just to watch him? That’s crazy. Also the article says he didn’t make a save but somehow he was still important?? I’m confused lol.

  2. I don’t get it, if there were 64,003 people in the stadium how did they say it’s a “tiny margins” miracle like bro 64k isn’t small. But the visa part is real, that’s wild. Hope they beat Saudi Arabia or whatever.

  3. Father’s Day and she finally gets in after 24 hours of travel… man that’s dedication. But it says “the team can still reach the knockout stage depending largely on Saudi Arabia” like isn’t that always? Also why mention he didn’t make a save… doesn’t that kind of ruin the whole goalie hype? Still, love the story, I guess.
