Toy Story 5 Holds Top Spot as Supergirl Falters

“Toy Story 5” is set to stay atop the box office heading into the pre–July 4th weekend, while Warner Bros./DC’s “Supergirl” opens at an estimated $38–40 million against a reported $170 million budget.
Friday brought a familiar kind of certainty to theaters: Disney/Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” kept its grip on the top spot as Warner Bros./DC’s “Supergirl” slipped well below expectations. “Toy Story 5” took $21 million on Friday and is projected to land an estimated $72.5 million second weekend.
With that hold, the animated sequel should move past $300 million in the U.S. and Canada by Sunday, continuing a run boosted by weekday crowds and midweek discount screenings. The audience momentum is carrying into the weekend too—its weekly drop is tracking at just 55% after opening to $160 million.
Direct competition is set to arrive next weekend. Universal/Illumination’s “Minions & Monsters” is tracking for a $100 million-plus 5-day opening, and it’s expected to challenge “Toy Story 5” as July gets going.

“Supergirl,” meanwhile, opened with far less traction. The film brought in $18 million on opening day, including $7.8 million from Thursday previews. From that start. industry estimates place its opening weekend at $38–40 million—an especially tough number when set against the film’s reported $170 million budget.
The movie’s early reception has matched the underwhelming trajectory. “Supergirl” stars Milly Alcock as the trauma-stricken Kara Zor-El and was directed by Craig Gillespie. Critics and audiences haven’t aligned in its favor. with Rotten Tomatoes scores landing at 57% for critics and 78% for audience. while CinemaScore gave it a B-. That B- trails the B CinemaScore received by the 2023 DC flop “The Flash,” which went on to make $271 million worldwide.

Warner Bros. had reason to feel hopeful coming off last year’s “Superman. ” which rebooted DC’s cinematic timeline under the newly formed DC Studios led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. “Superman” grossed $618 million worldwide. But “Supergirl” is following a rougher path in its early numbers—more like “The Flash” and other DC releases that arrived before the reboot. including “Birds of Prey” and “Blue Beetle.”.
DC’s next tentpole with a fresh lead actor may be a while away. The slate ahead at DC Studios includes the mid-budget horror film “Clayface,” the “Superman” sequel “Man of Tomorrow,” and the Robert Pattinson sequel “The Batman Part II.”
In fourth place this weekend. Paramount’s “Jackass: Best and Last” is bringing a different kind of fan base and a different scale. It made $3.7 million from 2,855 locations and is tracking for an opening weekend of $8.4 million. That’s about a third of the $23.1 million opening the 2022 predecessor “Jackass Forever” earned from an early February release.
The difference isn’t coming out of nowhere. “Jackass: Best and Last” was built as a retrospective on the franchise’s 25-year history. with half of its runtime dedicated to stunts from the 2001 MTV series and previous films. The movie was also produced on a budget of just $10 million, giving it a realistic path to break even.
For fans, the early signs are encouraging: “Best and Last” carries an A- on CinemaScore and an 85% Rotten Tomatoes audience score.

Toy Story 5 still winning, I’m shocked lol. Pre-July 4th weekend is basically free money for Disney.
Supergirl bombing is kinda wild because the budget is like 170 million?? That’s insane. Also those Rotten Tomatoes numbers being “okay for audiences” but still flop vibes… idk it just feels like they marketed it wrong.
I don’t get why they keep counting Thursday previews like it’s part of the opening weekend. Like if it got 7.8m Thursday then the movie already started failing, right? 38-40m sounds… not good, especially compared to Toy Story doing 72.5 projected.
The Flash comparison is hilarious/sad. If Supergirl’s CinemaScore is B- and The Flash got B, then why are we surprised it’s dropping below expectations? Also 55% drop after opening to 160m… that’s good but it’ll still slow down once people remember they can’t afford snacks at the theater.
