Massachusetts opens 2026 low-number plate lottery applications

Massachusetts is accepting applications for the 2026 Annual Low Number Plate Lottery for standard white passenger plates. Residents can apply through Aug. 14 via the myRMV Online Service Center, and winners will be notified by mail no later than Sept. 15.

Massachusetts drivers who want a shot at a low-number passenger plate have a narrow window to apply.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles announced Monday that it is now taking applications for the 2026 Annual Low Number Plate Lottery. The lottery covers standard white Massachusetts passenger license plates. with winners and alternate winners chosen using an electronic random number generator.

Notification will come by mail no later than Sept. 15.

To enter, applicants must be current Massachusetts residents with an active, state-registered and insured passenger motor vehicle. They also need a state-issued driver’s license or ID in good standing.

The RMV says there is no cost to enter, but anyone selected will have to pay the special plate fee in addition to the applicable standard vehicle registration fee.

Applications must be submitted through Aug. 14 at the myRMV Online Service Center.

Not everyone can participate. Commercial vehicles and motorcycles are not accepted for the lottery. The RMV also said MassDOT workers and contract employees, along with their immediate family members, are ineligible to participate.

For residents who qualify, the process is straightforward—one online application, a waiting period, and then a letter in the mailbox if a low number lands. For those who don’t meet the requirements, the RMV’s eligibility limits make clear this isn’t a broad lottery open to every vehicle owner.
