Hanks stars in the film as a pitching coach whose life changes after he gets beaned in the head with a hit ball while standing at the mound. The story is being adapted by Marielle Heller from Dave Eggers’ 2024 short story of the same name, with Heller helming from her own script.

Playtone and Leah Holzer are producing the project in cooperation with Major League Baseball.

The timing matters. For Hanks, it’s not his first swing at baseball cinema. He starred alongside Geena Davis. Madonna. Lori Petty and Rosie O’Donnell in the 1992 film A League of Their Own. where he played manager Jimmy Dugan. That movie arrived in theaters in July and became known for Hanks delivering the line. “There’s no crying in baseball.” It ranked No. 54 on AFI’s list of the best movie quotes.

Heller brings her own track record of turning grounded stories into something that sticks. Her most recent directorial work was Nightbitch in 2024, which starred Amy Adams. Her other credits include The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me?. and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood—starring Hanks as the late Fred Rogers.

A two-time Oscar-winning performer, Hanks is also already in motion with audiences. He returned to voice Woody in the animated hit Toy Story 5, which is now in theaters. His recent features include The Phoenician Scheme and Here.

With The Comebacker now set for July 30, 2027, it’s a familiar pairing—Hanks and baseball—built on a new injury-triggered premise and guided by a director who has already worked closely with him before.
