Tip leads police to 8 starving dogs and 2 arrests

Port St. Lucie police say an anonymous tip on April 20 led officers to a home on NW Biltmore Street, where eight severely dehydrated, malnourished dogs were found suffering from flea infestations and hookworms in unsanitary conditions. Two people were arrested
The phone call was specific enough to change everything. After an anonymous tip on April 20, Port St. Lucie police and Animal Control officers went to a home on the 300 block of NW Biltmore Street—only to find eight dogs in crisis.
Officers reported that the dogs were severely dehydrated and malnourished, with flea infestations and hookworms. The conditions at the home were described as unsanitary, filled with urine and feces. Many of the animals were significantly underweight and in visible distress.
Police said some dogs were observed trying to drink condensation from an air conditioning drain line—an image that underscored how desperate their need for water had become.
After the rescue, the eight dogs were taken to a local animal hospital. Veterinary staff allegedly confirmed that the dogs’ conditions reflected ongoing neglect and a lack of proper care.
The investigation resulted in arrests. Police say 36-year-old Joseph Calafiore and 33-year-old Alexandria Fiorenza were taken into custody, with each facing eight counts of animal cruelty.
Port St. Lucie police, along with their veterinary partners, expressed gratitude to the person who reported the situation, saying the tip helped save the lives of the dogs. All eight animals are now receiving medical care, nutritious meals, baths, and plenty of love.
The department urged anyone who suspects animal abuse or neglect to call 911.
