Timberwolves’ White interest tests Celtics’ roster logic

Timberwolves strong – Minnesota has “strong interest” in trading for Celtics guard Derrick White, a player praised for elite defense but coming off his worst shooting slump. With White locked in for two more seasons, the move becomes less about talent and more about whether Boston

A trade rumor has been hovering around Derrick White for weeks. but it’s the kind that makes roster math feel personal. The Minnesota Timberwolves — a team that has been pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo — now have “strong interest” in the Celtics guard. according to league sources cited by The Athletic’s Sam Amick.

White, who is set to turn 32 next month, remains one of the NBA’s most reliable defenders. He earned a spot on the NBA All-Defensive first team this past season — the first time in his career he has received that recognition. He had previously been named to the second team twice.

At point guard, White has also become one of the league’s top shot-blockers. He is 6-foot-4, and he tied seven-foot center Neemias Queta for the team lead in blocks at 1.3 per game. In the Celtics’ playoff series against Philadelphia, White raised his average to 1.4 blocks per game.

What makes the interest more complicated than just highlight-ready defense is the way White plays the entire possession. He’s described as an all-around gritty defender who is known for making every possible effort to get stops. He averaged 1.1 steals per game.

Those defensive skills, and the fact that White has been able to stay on the floor consistently, helped him earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in 2024. Over the past five seasons, he has played in at least 73 games each year.

Then comes the part Minnesota likely can’t ignore: White’s shooting slump.

This past season was the first of his nine-year career in which White shot less than 40 percent from the field. His 3-point percentage dropped from 38.4 in 2025 to 32.7 in 2026. For a player who is valued for elite defensive impact. that kind of drop changes how teams weigh fit and cost — especially when a bigger role is expected.

With Jayson Tatum out for most of the year and the Celtics losing several scorers including Jrue Holiday. Kristaps Porzingis. and Al Horford. White had to expand his workload. He hit career highs in minutes per game (34) and field-goals per game (14.4). The team used him most often as the No. 3 scoring option; Brown and Payton Pritchard averaged more points and field-goal attempts per game in the regular season.

Tatum, after recovering from offseason Achilles’ surgery, still ended up second on the team in field-goal attempts during his 16-game regular-season campaign.

Minnesota’s motivation for looking sideways at Boston is also rooted in recent postseason results. The Timberwolves lost to eventual runner-up San Antonio in the Western Conference semifinals. They had lost in the Western Conference Finals the previous two seasons.

But the reason White is not a simple “upgrade” target is that Minnesota’s cupboard has limits. The T-Wolves have a bona fide star in Anthony Edwards who is unlikely to be available for trade. And while the Celtics could use additional front-court pieces. the question becomes sharper when you consider what changes might be required to make a deal worth it — and what Minnesota would be willing to trade.

Even if the Celtics were tempted by another centerpiece. there’s uncertainty around whether swapping for a player like Rudy Gobert would “move the needle.” Gobert turns 34 next week. And if Minnesota is weighing its options around defensive assets. Boston’s personnel reality matters too: Jaden McDaniels is a 6-foot-9 athletic forward who shot 41.2 percent from 3-point range last season. but it’s unclear if White would be enough to pry him away.

Minnesota’s depth has helped them stay competitive — Naz Reid. Ayo Dosunmu. and Julius Randle are all named as part of the group that helped the team remain in the fight. Still. White’s combination of defensive value and fit makes it hard to imagine Boston accepting a package built primarily around those pieces.

The Celtics’ leverage is financial and temporal. White is under contract for the next two seasons, with a player option kicking in for 2029. By the end of his current deal, White would be 35.

In other words. Minnesota’s interest may be strong — but for the Celtics. the decision is going to be about more than how good White looks when he’s blocking shots and forcing steals. It’s about whether Boston wants to take on the risk of his shooting downturn while they’re already working through shifting roles. and whether the return is steep enough to justify moving a defender who has been consistent on the floor and elite at the point of impact.

  1. So Minnesota wants Derrick White after all that Giannis stuff? Seems like they just pick the next shiny thing. Roster math feel personal is kinda funny tho.

  2. Wait isn’t Derrick White the guy who can’t block anybody in the highlights? Like I swear I’ve seen him get scored on a lot. Maybe the article is mixing up seasons or teams.

  3. All-defensive first team and Olympic team but suddenly “worst shooting slump”?? That screams injured or something. Also Celtics rumors hanging around for weeks like it’s a news cycle, not a real plan. If he’s 32 next month then why would they risk it now, shouldn’t Minnesota be going for younger or something?
