Three Lions beat Congo and we’ll ALL be into extra time with a 1am kick-off!

1am kick-off – England’s World Cup knockout dream comes with a brutal viewing decision: if they beat DR Congo in the round of 32, their next match could kick off at 1am UK time—potentially dragging into the early hours and setting off a new wave of missed work, skipped schoo
For anyone trying to stay up and follow England through the World Cup knockout stages, the timing could turn into the tournament’s latest opponent.
Wednesday’s round-of-32 match against DR Congo arrives with a UK-friendly kick-off at 5pm. But if Thomas Tuchel’s men get past Congo, the schedule turns sharply unkind. Their first post-midnight game would come as they prepare to face Mexico or Ecuador in Mexico City. with that Sunday match starting at 6pm local time—1am in the UK.
The worry isn’t just the alarm clock. It’s what happens after it. The game could run until 3am or 4am on a Monday morning, leaving fans to choose between going to bed and accepting the tiredness, or committing to an all-nighter and hoping they can still function by work and school time.
Some supporters are already talking about pulling an all-nighter online, while others look at the chaos and decide to avoid the score entirely—planning to watch on catch-up TV with breakfast instead.
That same calculation hangs over the England captain’s household. Among those facing the decision is Katie, Harry Kane’s wife, whose position during the group stage stood in contrast to others in the stands.
While a number of WAGs—Megan Davison. the wife of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford; Ellie Watkins. the wife of Ollie Watkins; and Ashlyn Castro. Jude Bellingham’s girlfriend—have been pictured attending World Cup matches in the US. Kane’s wife has stayed at home with their four children. three of whom are of school age.
For the fans who do stay up, there’s another problem waiting outside the living room: whether pubs can legally keep doors open late enough to match the end of a 1am start.
Ministers have given pubs free rein to allow drinkers extra time during World Cup knockout stages. but that doesn’t cover kick-offs as late as 1am. If a venue wants to open that late. it has to apply to its local licensing authority for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN). That requirement can trigger stand-offs where locals push back on noise.
There are no published figures for how many pubs have applied for a TEN, and most venues will likely wait for the outcome of Wednesday’s round-of-32 match against Congo before making their move.
Paul Crossman, chairman of the Campaign for Pubs, said pubs will try to judge demand as the tournament progresses rather than committing across the board in advance. He added that venues may decide it isn’t commercially worthwhile to keep staff on until 4am unless they expect a full house.
So the road to the next England game isn’t just about surviving the knockout stage. It’s about surviving the morning after—whether that means fighting sleep, planning for tired commutes, or finding out too late that the pub you wanted to be in won’t be allowed to open long enough.
