‘The whole world knows Arda now’: Guler’s World Cup rise

Arda Güler’s journey—from a left-footer dream in Ankara to becoming Real Madrid’s creative spark—has turned him into Turkey’s most scrutinized hope for the World Cup. With 33 La Liga appearances, 25 starts, nine league assists, two crucial moments for Turkey i

When Arda Güler finally steps out under World Cup lights, it won’t just be another tournament for Turkey’s newest obsession. It will be the moment his childhood momentum catches up with the world.

The story begins the way many modern prodigies do: with a parent who can’t stop dreaming. Güler’s father was obsessed with Fenerbahçe. and as soon as his son could walk. he was kicking balloons around their living room—strategically placed on Güler’s left side. because he wanted a left-footer. Güler became a Fenerbahçe fan too.

His first visit to İstanbul wasn’t a casual trip. When he travelled from his home in Ankara to see the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium. he climbed the steps to look down at the green grass and was mesmerised. His mother drove him and his sister for five hours. then slept in the car overnight so they could be at the front of the ticket queue.

At 13, Güler moved to İstanbul alone to join Fenerbahçe’s academy. His youth coach, Erol Tokgözler, said he’d never seen talent like it. “The ball was like another limb, a third foot. He could do anything he set his mind to. And the best of all is that in each situation he had two. three. four or five alternatives. five different plans. The location of the field didn’t matter. He plays football with his mind.”.

Even that gift came with a cost. Güler was so quick to rise that he couldn’t make friends in his new city because teammates were annoyed by his rapid rise to the youth team’s No 10 shirt and captaincy. Responsibility and pressure became part of his everyday routine.

Ferdi Kadıoğlu—Turkey teammate and close friend, and Brighton’s player of the season—put it bluntly. “He’s an amazing player with special qualities. He shows amazing things when he’s on the pitch with us, and for sure he will feel the pressure but that makes him also the player he is.”

The early signs were already there in senior football. In his first appearance for Fenerbahçe’s senior team. in a friendly at only 15. Güler asked Brazilian Jose Sosa if he could take a free-kick. The moment was caught on the stadium’s big screen. Sosa told him where to go. but fans were impressed by the courage of a precocious boy trying to handle set-pieces from a senior player.

Güler also doesn’t shy away from physical emotion—on the pitch and among crowds. At Euro 2024, he took abuse from Austrian fans. Turkey’s young superstar received insults throughout the game. and when he assisted Turkey’s goal. he turned to the Austrian fans and cupped his ear. The sight—coming from a 19-year-old—became one of the images people kept from his young career so far.

His rise accelerated again when he took Fenerbahçe’s No 10 shirt from his idol, Mesut Özil. He made his Turkey debut aged 17, before Real Madrid approached.

The switch to Madrid came with the kind of story that sounds too surreal to be real: Carlo Ancelotti called on FaceTime from a holiday resort wearing a Hawaiian shirt and smoking a cigar, and Güler couldn’t really say no.

This season, he became more integral to Madrid’s first XI under Xabi Alonso and later Álvaro Arbeloa. He played 33 La Liga games, including 25 starts. Only Lamine Yamal and Getafe’s Luis Milla recorded more than Güler’s nine assists in the league. He scored a brilliant free-kick against Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals in one of his best performances yet. even though he couldn’t prevent Madrid’s exit.

Still, the standout chapter for Turkey came through the play-offs. Güler assisted Kadıoğlu in a semi-final win over Romania, then they beat Kosovo in the final. “I think now the whole world knows who Arda is,” Kadıoğlu said. “This season he is playing regularly. He shows himself very well. He had an amazing match [against Bayern], two goals. He went [to Madrid] at a very young age. He saw how good the squad was, he had to make steps with his physicality. You see now he’s getting better and better.”.

Turkey’s path to the tournament through the play-offs might sound like a weakness to some. It was anything but simple. The team was in a tough qualifying group with Spain and still picked up 13 points from a possible 18. Vincenzo Montella is now in charge, and Turkey will aim to top Group D containing Australia, Paraguay and the USA.

Kenan Yıldız is another bright name in the squad. He will play on the wing at the World Cup, and Kadıoğlu described the group as grounded. “They are top guys outside of the pitch. really normal. always respectable. ” Kadıoğlu said of Güler and Yıldız. “When they are coming to the pitch, they show their qualities. They have really high confidence and what they do with the ball. it’s amazing … They get a bit more attention than the other players.”.

Attention is the word that keeps coming back around Güler—sometimes as praise, sometimes as pressure.

The numbers do not hide it. There is no doubt who bears the greatest scrutiny and responsibility. The Turkey national team has 217k followers on Instagram, while Güler has nearly 18 million. If social media is a barometer of popularity. fame or even pressure. it says something that Real Madrid teammate Endrick and Barcelona’s Gavi and Yamal are the only other footballers aged 21 or younger with similar followings.

And then there was the moment his season almost broke the rhythm of the entire campaign. Güler’s injury late in the season sent Turkey into a state of national crisis. but he’s back and he’s fit. When Turkey trained in Arizona last week ahead of the tournament. 3. 000 people turned up to watch—many wearing Real Madrid shirts.

That hysteria follows him because it has been building for years. It has been there since he could walk. kicked into motion in a living room in Ankara. then amplified through Fenerbahçe. through national team responsibility. through Madrid’s system. and finally through the play-offs that carried Turkey to the World Cup.

Now the next stage arrives. For Güler, it isn’t just a tournament. It’s the culmination of a path that has never really slowed down—and it’s one the world is watching.
