The Greatest Western of All Time Is Free

As of January 1, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” — Sergio Leone’s 1966 spaghetti Western starring Clint Eastwood — is streaming for free on Tubi.

For three hours, you can disappear into dust, steel, and Ennio Morricone’s unforgettable music — because “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” is now streaming for free on Tubi.

The change matters if you’ve been meaning to finally watch Sergio Leone’s 1966 epic. It’s widely treated as one of the greatest films of all time, and specifically one of the best Westerns, with many arguing it’s also the singular definitive spaghetti Western.

That reputation isn’t only talk. The film’s Rotten Tomatoes score sits at 97% for critics and 97% for audiences, a consensus that the movie is simply great.

“Dollars Trilogy” threads, but the payoff isn’t Marvel-sized

Leone’s film doesn’t stand alone in spirit. Along with “A Fistful of Dollars” and “For a Few Dollars More. ” “The Good. the Bad and the Ugly” is part of the loosely connected “Dollars Trilogy. ” sometimes called the “Man with No Name Trilogy” after Clint Eastwood’s character archetype of the antihero. While Eastwood’s gunslinger is famously nameless in the series branding. he does technically have a name in all three films.

The movies aren’t really related story-wise beyond the shared director, the shared genre, and Eastwood’s presence: a laconic cowboy who wears a cool hat and a sarape. If you’re hoping for a connected, big “everyone meets up” payoff, Leone didn’t design these films that way.

Blondie, Tuco, and Angel Eyes orbit the gold

In “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” Eastwood plays a bounty hunter nicknamed Blondie — the “Good” in the title. Blondie isn’t exactly a hero of the wholesome variety. He runs a scam with a bandit named Tuco, the “Ugly,” played by Eli Wallach. Blondie hands Tuco over for a bounty. then saves him from being hanged so they can split the money and repeat the process again in another town.

Their uneasy path crosses with a mercenary called Angel Eyes, the “Bad,” played by Lee Van Cleef. Angel Eyes is searching for a stash of stolen Confederate gold.

As the story pushes them forward, Tuco finds out the cemetery where the gold is buried, while Blondie learns the specific grave it’s hidden in. That knowledge forces them to (kinda) work together in an uneasy alliance.

Yes, the standoff is coming — because that’s the movie’s job

There’s a reason the plot feels like it’s leading you toward confrontation: the movie builds to a three-way standoff over who gets the gold. It’s tempting to treat that as a spoiler. but it also undercuts the craft — from Leone’s directing to Ennio Morricone’s iconic score to Eastwood’s steely-eyed glare.

In other words, this is a definitive spaghetti Western. Standoffs aren’t an accident here. They’re part of the language: boots and revolvers, and all that comes with them.

A free watch starting January 1

The big news is straightforward: as of January 1. “The Good. the Bad and the Ugly” is streaming for free on Tubi. With that access, there’s little reason to put it off.
