The Anaheim Ducks shared an emotional video showing when franchise icon Ryan Getzlaf learned of his jersey retirement.
The Anaheim Ducks are honoring a franchise legend in 2026-27. Anaheim will retire the number of franchise icon Ryan Getzlaf this coming season. Getzlaf spent his entire career in Orange County and will now receive the ultimate honor.
The former Ducks forward will have his number hung from the rafters at the Honda Center on January 30, 2027. He will be the fourth player to have his number retired by the Ducks. Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne, and Scott Niedermayer also have their numbers in the rafters.
On Tuesday, Anaheim shared the moment when Getzlaf learned he was receiving this honor.
As mentioned, Getzlaf played his entire 17-year career with the Ducks franchise. He leads all Anaheim skaters in games played, assists, and points. He is the only player in franchise history to score 1000 or more points while in an Anaheim sweater.
In 2007, Getzlaf helped lead Anaheim to its only Stanley Cup to date. He scored seven goals and 17 points in that run to the Cup. Anaheim took down the Ottawa Senators in five games to claim that championship.
“My family and I are so grateful to the Samuelis and the Ducks organization for this incredible honor,” said Getzlaf in a statement released by the Ducks. “None of this would be possible without all the amazing teammates, coaches and support staff I had in my career. I thank them all and can’t wait to celebrate in front of our great fans in January.”
The Ducks are looking to build on their return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season. Anaheim begins its 2026-27 campaign on October 2 against the Vegas Golden Knights.
