State highway crews repaired a pothole on the Interstate 95 bridge in Laurel, Maryland, that caused major headaches for drivers Wednesday.
The Maryland State Highway Administration said that shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, they were notified of a “deck puncture,” which is like a “pothole on the bridge driving surface” in the right lane on southbound I-95 bridge over Stansfield Road.
The work crews blocked three of the four left lanes to repair the “puncture” in the concrete.
The bridge is just prior to the Prince George’s County line in Laurel.
Charlie Gischlar, the deputy director of communications for the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Maryland State Highway Administration, said that they closed one lane immediately after finding the puncture, and later shut three lanes for a major concrete repair.
They started to reopen the lanes at 7:40 p.m.
“It’s kind of like a pothole, but it’s on a bridge deck. So with a with a pothole, you have the insulation of the ground underneath. But here you’ve got the rebar that’s showing and it it is a more extensive repair because it involves concrete,” Gischlar said.
All lanes reopened completely at 8 p.m.
