Across the state, other kinds of “next” are now taking shape too: U.S. News and World Report has released its 2026-27 Best Global Universities list. and several Texas universities are showing up among the world’s leading research institutions.

The ranking pulls from 13 indicators, with results weighted to measure global research performance and reputation. From the full pool of the world’s 2,250 top universities, six Texas schools crack the top 500.

The highest placement in Texas goes to the University of Texas at Austin, which sits at No. 56. The Austin campus is listed as a public university.

Texas A&M University at College Station follows with a Global Ranking of No. 117 (tie), also categorized as a public university in College Station.

Rice University, a private institution in Houston, lands at No. 201.

On the San Antonio side, the University of Texas at San Antonio appears at No. 296 (tie), also a public university.

Baylor University, a private school in Waco, is ranked at No. 451.

The University of Texas at Dallas makes it into the top 500 as well, coming in at No. 503 (tie) as a public university in Richardson.

Beyond that top slice, additional major Texas universities are still present on the global list. The University of Houston is ranked No. 390. Texas Tech University is listed at No. 562 (tie). The University of North Texas sits at No. 739 (tie). The University of Texas at Arlington is ranked No. 875 (tie).

Texas State University is listed at No. 1531 (tie). Texas Christian University appears at No. 1906 (tie), and is categorized as a private university in Fort Worth.

The numbers together sketch a clear spread across Texas: strong top-tier representation for public flagships and major private research universities, followed by a second tier of campuses that remain part of the world ranking even outside the top 500.
