Tesla Model Y L Launching This Fall in North America

Tesla Model – Tesla’s longer-wheelbase Model Y L is moving toward a North American launch targeted for August or September, with production set for Gigafactory Texas. The six-seater, already on roads in testing and introduced in China last summer, adds more space, a 16-inch

The longer-wheelbase Model Y L is coming, and this time the waiting game may be ending sooner than many North American buyers expected.

Internally, Tesla’s North American launch timeline for the Model Y L is currently pegged for August or September. The key detail is that this is a strict internal target rather than a public launch date. so it could still slide if testing runs long or production faces delays. Even so. the schedule signals urgency—especially in a moment when Tesla has been working to bridge a growing product gap after it officially closed Model S and Model X orders.

Production is set to begin at Gigafactory Texas, where tooling changes are underway to support the vehicle. The factory prep matches earlier clues: a bare frame for the Model Y L was spotted at Giga Texas earlier this spring. Then came the validation work that goes beyond factory walls—spotted testing on U.S. roads for the first time in April, and more recently seen testing at the Fremont factory tracks. The pace matters. It suggests Tesla is pushing to lock in the kind of roomier SUV families have been asking for. with a six-seat layout built around adjustable seating.

There’s also a notable tension in the timing itself. Elon Musk had previously hinted that the three-row variant would make its way stateside in late 2026 or “never.” A fall push for the Model Y L is a slight departure from that earlier message. and it’s shaping how quickly the new model is likely to reach shoppers.

The Model Y L first made waves when it debuted in China last summer. After that, it launched in Australia and New Zealand, with availability expanding across Asian markets as of late. In its current form. the vehicle is built as a family-focused hauler with clear measurable changes: it has a 150mm longer wheelbase and a 179mm greater overall length than a standard Model Y.

Those added dimensions are meant to create a true 2-2-2 layout, supported by adjustable second- and third-row seats. The second row uses two adjustable captain’s chairs, both heated and ventilated. Inside, the cabin gets a larger 16-inch central screen, and the setup includes a comfort-tuned suspension.

Performance, meanwhile, stays close to what buyers already know. The Model Y L’s performance is described as quite similar to the Model Y Premium (previously “Long Range”) All-Wheel Drive. In China, it reaches 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, and the U.S. version is expected to land around the same neighborhood—roughly a 4.6-second 0 to 60 mph time. Range expectations also track closely with existing trims: the Chinese market lists a 751 km CLTC range. described as virtually identical to the regular Model Y AWD’s 750 km rating. As a result, the U.S. version is expected to retain the Premium AWD’s EPA-rated range of 327 miles.

Money is where the new model has to make sense for families. In China. the Model Y L is priced at 339. 000 yuan (about $50. 000). while the AWD trim below it starts at 313. 500 yuan (about $46. 300). That places the Model Y L at a roughly $4,000 premium. With the U.S. Premium AWD model priced at $49. 900. the expectation is that the Model Y L will cost around $53. 990—putting it below the Performance trim ($57. 990).

Once North American deliveries begin, Tesla’s overseas plans could move quickly too. The Model Y L already received EU type approval last year. which sets up the possibility of a European debut following right behind the American launch. The bigger promise is global: Tesla’s first true six-seat crossover. designed for families who want more space without stepping into a totally different vehicle category.

  1. So is this the 7 seater one or the “L” just means long like longer battery? I’m confused. Either way I want it, but Tesla probably will delay it to 2027.

  2. They closed Model S and X orders right? So they’re rushing Model Y L to make up for it. Sounds like desperation to me. Also “internal target” means nothing, they’ll push it when they feel like it.

  3. I saw one of these in a test video and it looked huge, like the third row was already in there. If it’s coming from Gigafactory Texas why does it say it’s already on roads in testing like…does that mean people can just steal one? lol. Late 2026 or never was what Musk said, so this is either a real change or another marketing thing.
