For years, Tall Ship Providence has been part of Alexandria’s shoreline life—docked year-round near Waterfront Park in Old Town, welcoming visitors and supporting educational tours. Today, the nonprofit foundation that operates the ship suspended those educational and tour operations.
The vessel is a replica of the original USS Providence, used during the American Revolutionary War. It has called Alexandria home since 2019.
The Tall Ship Providence Foundation said the decision was not made lightly. In a statement, the foundation’s board and staff said they share “the sadness felt by the community that has supported this mission so faithfully.”
The shutdown arrives alongside a fresh push to make the ship’s location the anchor for a much bigger public project. A two-year-old United States Maritime Foundation is proposing a national museum built around Tall Ship Providence at the same Old Town site.
That proposal describes a museum intended to “tell the story of America and the sea” and to highlight “the merchants. shipbuilders. sailors. naval leaders. watermen. explorers. conservationists and recreational mariners who helped shape our country.” The news release says Alexandria is “the right place to tell that story for all Americans.”.
The maritime foundation is working to secure the property at 1 Prince St., adjacent to Waterfront Park, where it hopes to build a 50,000-square-foot museum. The Washington Business Journal reported that the maritime foundation is under contract to buy the property.
In its push for support. the maritime foundation called the museum plan “a major opportunity for Alexandria.” It says the project would “strengthen the waterfront. support tourism and local businesses. deepen the city’s identity as a historic port. ” and give “families. students. veterans. visitors. and donors” a place to encounter America’s maritime legacy.
Two weeks ago, Tall Ship Providence drew attention for its participation in an America 250 gathering of tall ships, a point highlighted by WTOP’s Matt Kaufax.
Now, the ship’s year-round dockside presence has shifted from programming to silence—at least for educational and tour operations—as the community that built support for the vessel’s mission weighs how the Old Town waterfront may evolve next.

So they just shut down the tours… why though? Seems like a money thing.
I saw this and thought it was still docked?? Like is it actually gone or just no tours. Also a whole museum sounds expensive and they always take forever.
Wait the Tall Ship Providence is a replica of the USS Providence from the Revolutionary War, right? I don’t get how they can call it educational and then suspend it. Maybe they’re trying to force people to donate so they can build the museum at 1 Prince St.
This feels like typical Alexandria drama. First it’s all tours year-round and then “silence” when the museum idea shows up. But I’m betting the ship is still there, just not letting people on because the contract to buy the property didn’t happen or something. Either way, America should’ve learned the lesson from boat stuff, not marketing stuff.
