Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng’s dream of claiming its first-ever AFC Challenge League title was shattered in dramatic fashion last night, with host’s Kuwait SC claiming the trophy in an incredible 110-minute 4-3 match.. It was a painful defeat for the Cambodian side, who took the lead twice before falling at the final hurdle.. Svay Rieng stunned the crowd at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium with a dominant early display, racing ahead to a 2-0
lead in just the ninth minute and giving Cambodian fans real hope.. Striker Tiago Alves opened the scoring in the third minute before setting up Japanese midfielder Ryo Fujii for a second goal in the ninth minute.. The Cambodian domestic champions could have gone even further ahead in the 35th minute when striker Peprah Kwame was presented with a golden opportunity after a perfect cross from teammate Patrick Robson, but his effort struck the post
in what proved to be a costly miss.. The second half saw the hosts mount a comeback, with strikers El Mehdi Marrahma and Ali Abdulla Marhoon scoring in the 48th and 56th minutes to level the match at 2-2.. The score remained unchanged after 90 minutes, with the final going into extra time.. Emotions swung wildly, with Brazilian striker Cristian Roque restoring Svay Rieng’s lead in the 96th minute with a superb strike from outside
the penalty area, sparking huge celebrations among the Cambodian supporters.. Unfortunately, their joy turned out to be premature.. Kuwaiti captain Ammouri equalised again in the 99th minute, ramping up the tension.. As in all finals football, there had to be winner and a loser.. Sadly, the Kingdom’s champions drew the short straw.. Kuwaiti substitute striker Al-Sulaiman completed the home team’s thrilling comeback with the winning goal in the 110th minute, sealing a hard-earned 4-3 victory..
The stadium erupted with cheers as the triumphant Kuwait SC players and fans celebrated lifting the trophy, while the Svay Rieng players were left devastated by the last-minute loss.. The result marked the second consecutive season that the Cambodian club has finished runner-up.. In last season’s final, Svay Rieng lost 2-1 to Turkmenistan’s FK Arkadag on home soil.. Even striker Peprah Kwame, who won the tournament’s Golden Boot award with eight goals, showed little joy
while receiving the individual prize.. After the match, striker Cristian Roque expressed his deep disappointment and apologised to Cambodian fans.. “It’s very difficult to speak after losing a final like this.. I just want to thank everyone for their support and apologise to the whole Cambodian nation that believed in us.. I’m truly sorry,” he said.. Club president Dy Vichea also issued a public apology following the defeat.. “I sincerely apologise to all football-loving parents,
uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters who supported and watched the AFC Challenge League final between Kuwait SC and Preah Khan Reach Svay Rieng.. We could not bring home the victory and the trophy for all of you,” he said.
