The incident happened at Carnival Cruise Line’s Grand Bahama destination, Celebration Key, on May 9. The guest, an 88-year-old American woman, reportedly lost control of her mobility scooter and went over a pier while the Carnival Celebration was in port.

Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the circumstances in a statement shared with PEOPLE. saying the guest drove off the pier at Celebration Key and fell into the water.. The cruise line added that crew members responded immediately and were able to pull her from the water.. Despite resuscitation efforts, she did not survive.

Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) officers are now investigating the death. In a press release, authorities said she reportedly lost control and drove off the pier shortly after 12:00 p.m. local time, turning what began as a routine port activity into a fatal emergency.

Officials also indicated their current working theory about what may have happened before the fall.. They believe she struck her head against the vessel’s hull prior to entering the water.. Afterward. a local physician pronounced her dead. and custody of her body was taken by the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the coroner’s office.

  1. I feel like they’re gonna blame “lost control” because it’s easier. But secured pier or not, there should be barriers. Also why is an 88-year-old on a scooter near a hull like that…

  2. Wait so she hit the ship hull then went in? That’s just wild. I’m not saying I know, but maybe the scooter malfunctioned or the ground was slippery like with algae. They keep saying no name released yet but the story is already everywhere.

  3. This is why I hate when people act like cruise ports are “safe.” If it happened shortly after noon, why wasn’t anyone stopping scooters from getting that close? They say they pulled her out and tried resuscitation but like… once it’s over the edge it’s over. I wonder if there was like a gate that didn’t close or something and nobody checked.
