Suspect arrested after fatal stabbing at Wellesley park

suspect arrested – A 58-year-old man died after being stabbed at Phillips Park in Wellesley on Thursday night, and prosecutors say a 26-year-old was arrested and is expected to be arraigned in Dedham District Court.

Crime scene tape went up at Phillips Park in Wellesley on Thursday night, as investigators worked around the quiet stretch of 11 Maugus Avenue hours after a man was fatally stabbed.

The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office said Wellesley police responded just before 6 p.m. to a 911 call at Phillips Park. Officers found a 58-year-old man with an apparent stab wound and took him to Newton Wellesley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Prosecutors said the case moved quickly from the initial investigation to an arrest. Following that early work, police took a 26-year-old man into custody. The district attorney’s office identified him as James Floyd Bennett III of Wellesley and said he was expected to be arraigned Friday morning in Dedham District Court.

As of Thursday night, the district attorney’s office had not publicly identified the victim and did not say what charges Bennett is facing. Attorney information for Bennett was not available.

State Police and Wellesley police are investigating, the district attorney’s office said. Prosecutors also told the public they should not feel unsafe as the investigation continues.

“The investigation is active and ongoing. Based on preliminary information, there is no cause for the public to be alarmed for their own safety,” the district attorney’s office wrote.

  1. Why wouldn’t they say what the charges are? Like if they already arrested someone, that should be public. Also 6pm Thursday night and he’s dead… that’s awful.

  2. James Floyd Bennett III sounds like one of those names that pops up in court a lot, so not surprised. I saw stabbing news like this last year and it was the ‘quiet neighborhood’ too, so idk why they’re acting like the public shouldn’t be alarmed.

  3. Wait they found him at Phillips Park, took him to Newton Wellesley Hospital, and he was pronounced dead… and then they just grabbed the 26-year-old? That seems fast but also maybe that’s normal. They didn’t even name the victim which is weird, but then they name Bennett right away. I’m just hoping they actually released what he did because “no cause to be alarmed” is kinda vague to say after something like this.
