Critics mock Park Police video as pool vandal claim

Park Police posted a blurry video and asked the public to help identify a person in a June 19 alleged Destruction of Government Property investigation at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The notice drew sharp mocking online, even as President Donald Trump
On Wednesday, Park Police put the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on display again—this time not with tourists, but with a blurry video and a call for help identifying an alleged vandal.
The United States Park Police posted to X seeking assistance in identifying the individual depicted “in connection with a Destruction of Government Property investigation.” Officials said the alleged incident occurred on June 19 at around 3:30 p.m.
The post referenced the pool as it sits after recent renovations. with algae beginning to bloom following the completion of work on June 14. 2026. in Washington. DC. The footage released by Park Police was shot from a distance and. to critics. didn’t clearly show much beyond a person reaching into the water and pulling something out. In roughly a handful of seconds, the scene ends.
But the part of the video that seemed ambiguous to many quickly became the target of sharper ridicule than the request for public assistance. Critics posted questions about what the person was supposed to accomplish—one mocking comment asked. in the span of the apparent action. “what on earth do you think they accomplished?” Another complained that officials didn’t produce the “350 foot slice” some viewers associated with the earlier public claims about damage to the pool. Several others used sarcastic. escalating language to deride the seriousness of Park Police’s release. with one user accusing the agency of turning into propaganda rather than investigation.
The online backlash landed amid a dispute that has been closely tied to President Donald Trump’s own assertions about what went wrong with the pool’s newly installed coating.
Trump has said vandals were responsible for why the $14 million “American flag blue” coating he had installed is now peeling as algae turns the water a toxic-looking shade of green. Park Service employee photos from the prior week showed cleaning efforts. including an employee using a vacuum pump to clean algae off the bottom of the newly repainted Reflecting Pool.
Over the weekend, Trump told reporters that vandals “went in there with a knife” and carved a “290, 300-foot slit right through it, probably a box cutter or a knife of some kind.” He made the claim even though there is no evidence presented in the description of any such gash.
A visit to the site by HuffPost on Monday reportedly found nothing close to an enormous slit—an observation that critics say contrasts with the way the supposed cut appears to “grow longer” each time Trump mentions it.
Then, on Tuesday, Trump said six people have been arrested over recent damage to the pool. One of those people is described as a cyclist and former Olympic canoe racer who says he touched a piece of the peeled-off paint, but denies damaging the site in any way.
With Park Police now seeking identification based on a short. distant clip of a person reaching into the water. the clash between competing versions of what happened—what video clearly shows. what Trump described in detail. and what a site visit did or did not find—has turned into a public test of credibility. not just a criminal probe.
For Park Police, the goal was simple: identify someone depicted in the June 19 incident. For the people watching, the result was a different kind of confrontation—one where the request for help quickly became fuel for mockery, and where the details of the alleged damage remain contested.

Wait so they released a blurry video like it’s gonna solve it… lol
If the video only shows someone reaching in, how is anyone supposed to know what they did. Also “350 foot slice”?? That part feels made up or something.
Sounds like algae was blooming and they’re acting like that’s vandalism? I mean if the pool is new and they already have issues, maybe it wasn’t even that person. Plus a 5-second clip is basically nothing.
This is exactly the kind of thing that makes police look desperate. Blurry, from far away, ends right when it matters, then people are supposed to “identify the vandal” like it’s TV. I saw someone say propaganda and I can’t even argue with that vibe because why not show more instead of setting everyone up to mock you.
