Ramona’s hummus wins the supermarket tub test

Hummus is a wonderfully versatile food, whether served as part of a main meal or enjoyed as a quick snack. And while freshly made hummus is undeniably tasty, it’s often far more convenient to simply grab a tub during your weekly supermarket run. Virtually every major supermarket stocks its own range, from a straightforward recipe through to varieties featuring jalapeño or caramelised onions. As a devoted hummus enthusiast, I decided to put several supermarket own-brand tubs to the test to find out which one reigns

supreme. Picking up options from Lidl, Morrisons, and the Co-op, I also purchased Ramona’s hummus to see how these would compare to my favourite option. Before embarking on my taste test, Ramona’s was already my preferred supermarket hummus, and despite sampling several strong contenders, it continues to hold the top spot. That said, at £3.50 it’s hardly the most budget-friendly choice on the shelf. While you may need to spend a little more, Ramona’s Hummus delivers noticeably more depth of flavour than its rivals, particularly

when stacked up against the selection of plain hummus options available. Alongside their plain ‘heavenly hummus’, Ramona’s also offers jalapeño, red pepper, and beetroot varieties for those seeking something a little more adventurous. Rating: 5/5 Priced at £1.49, Morrisons’ classic hummus is considerably more affordable than Ramona’s; however, it is still pricier than Lidl’s offering, which I found to be noticeably more enjoyable. Morrisons’ hummus was rather bland and undoubtedly one of the weaker offerings I’ve sampled. While I might purchase it again if I

was desperately in need of hummus and happened to be near a Morrisons, it’s not one I would make a special trip for — and even if I found myself in Morrisons, I’d probably opt for an alternative brand. Rating: 2.75/5 Lidl’s hummus was the most affordable at just 95p, and although it wasn’t the finest, I’d happily spend more for the same product. It boasted more flavour than the Morrisons option, yet it didn’t quite match up to Ramona’s or Co-op’s. While not quite

the most flavoursome, Lidl’s hummus was wonderfully smooth, making it an excellent accompaniment to carrot sticks. 3.5/5 For me, Co-op came out on top among the own-brand hummuses, though it still fell just short of Ramona’s. Priced at £1.40, it was considerably more affordable and is definitely one I’ll be returning to. Bursting with flavour, the hummus was velvety smooth while maintaining the ideal thickness, making it a fantastic option to serve alongside carrot, cucumber, breadsticks, or whatever you fancy dipping. 4/5

  1. So Ramona’s is best but it’s also not cheap? Like okay but I just want garlic hummus that doesn’t taste like paper.

  2. I saw this and immediately thought it meant like some health/safety test at the store? But it’s just taste. Still wild to me Morrisons got 2.75, that’s basically saying it’s not worth buying.

  3. £3.50 for hummus??? I’m sorry that’s like the price of a whole meal here. And if Lidl is 95p but smoother then how are people not just buying that one every time. Also jalapeño hummus sounds like a mistake, but they said it’s “adventurous” so idk.
