Superhuman’s pitch has never sounded like a morality play. The company makes tools for people who want to write faster and smarter with AI in the driver’s seat. That’s why its acquisition of GPTZero lands a little like a plot twist: one company selling AI assistance is buying a service designed to tell you whether content is synthetic.
Superhuman announced that it has acquired GPTZero. GPTZero offers AI identification services that include hallucination and plagiarism detection. It also runs a smaller, “nifty” tool that displays how much of the internet is artificial intelligence. After the deal. Superhuman said it plans to integrate GPTZero into its Superhuman Go AI assistant. aiming to improve the reach of its existing efforts around AI and authenticity.
Teachers and students will remain the priority audience for Superhuman following the acquisition. GPTZero also emphasized that Superhuman would help put its tools “in places where people were already reading and writing.”
The companies did not disclose financial terms of the deal.
On the surface, the pairing feels awkward. The press release framing the acquisition centers on concerns about whether the public can identify AI-generated content. Superhuman, meanwhile, is explicitly encouraging people to use AI to generate content. Superhuman’s most popular product is an AI writing assistant known for Grammarly. which already includes its own tools for AI detection. But the push to spread AI resources across Grammarly has come with backlash of its own.
One flashpoint involved the company trying to give users AI-generated feedback that aped the voice and style of other writers—an approach other writers said they weren’t pleased with.
