“Supergirl” soars to streaming on HBO Max on Sept. 10.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the adaptation is based on the DC comic series “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” by Tom King. In the comic, Supergirl and a young alien girl named Ruthye travel across the galaxy to hunt down Krem of the Yellow Hill after he murders Ruthye’s father.
The official logline reads, “When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice.”
Milly Alcock, who previously reigned as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s “House of the Dragon” and played Simone in Netflix’s 2025 limited series “Sirens,” took her stardom to the next level in her punk-rock take as “Supergirl.”
“Supergirl” arrived in theaters on June 26 a year after “Superman,” which rebooted the DC Universe under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Unlike its counterpart, “Supergirl” lost $100 million to $120 million in its theatrical run, debuting to a $37.1 million from 3,600 North American theaters and $62.6 million globally. It finished its run with just $126 million worldwide.
“While ‘Supergirl’ didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in,” Safran told the New York Times.
Those who did see the movie were similarly unimpressed. The film received a “rotten” rating from the review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes and a B-minus grade in CinemaScore exit polls.
