‘Sunday in the Park with George’ Producers React to Ariana Grande Dropping Out, Confirm Role Will Be Recast

The producers of the upcoming London production of Sunday in the Park with George have spoken out following Ariana Grande‘s decision to drop out of the show.

Ariana was set to reunite with her Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey in the summer 2027 production at the Barbican Centre in London. She was set to play the roles of Dot and Marie while Jonathan is playing the title role, George Seurat.

If you don’t know, the Stephen Sondheim musical follows painter Georges Seurat as he meticulously works on his masterpiece, “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” while navigating his complicated relationship with his lover Dot. The second act of the musical later shifts to his great-grandson, George, exploring how art, love, and creative legacy echo across generations, with Dot now aged to be elderly.

The production was announced in January 2026 and tickets were supposed to go on sale months ago, with the on-sale date pushed to Autumn 2026.

Amid Ariana‘s decision to step back from public life at the end of her Eternal Sunshine Tour, she has also dropped out of the Sunday production.

The dual role of Dot/Marie will be recast.

Following this evening’s announcement from Ariana Grande’s team, we can confirm that she has decided to step back from Sunday in the Park with George.

We know this cannot have been an easy decision, and she makes it with our complete understanding and support.

We wish her nothing but the best.

The production will open at the Barbican in summer 2027 as planned, and casting will be announced in due course.

Coming up later this year, Ariana is starring in the new movie Focker-In-Law, set for release on November 25.
