Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Premieres July 23, 2026

“Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” the upcoming sequel spin-off from The Big Bang Theory franchise, launches July 23, 2026, with Kevin Sussman returning as Stuart Bloom—and a premise that turns a once-gloomy side character into the unlikely center of a multi
Stuart Bloom doesn’t get to be background radiation anymore.
With “multiverse Armageddon” on the table and reality suddenly in need of fixing, Kevin Sussman is stepping back into the spotlight as comic book store owner Stuart Bloom in the upcoming spin-off sequel, “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.” The new series is set to premiere on July 23, 2026.
For 12 seasons. “The Big Bang Theory” built its escape into fantasy through Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and his gang of nerdy misfits—everything from competitive gaming on World of Warcraft to long-running Dungeons & Dragons campaigns where the mundane academic world could fall away. “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” looks like it’s taking that itch and turning it outward. pivoting from comedy into something flashier and more directly fantasy-leaning.
The story kicks off when Stuart accidentally triggers a “multiverse Armageddon” after breaking a device built by Sheldon and Leonard (Johnny Galecki). Suddenly, Stuart isn’t just showing up for a few awkward moments—he’s responsible for restoring reality.
To complete the mission. Stuart partners with his girlfriend Denise (Lauren Lapkus). his geologist friend Bert (Brian Posehn). and the quantum physicist Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). described as an “all-around pain in the ass.” Along the way. the official synopsis teases that they’ll meet alternate-universe versions of characters audiences have come to know from “The Big Bang Theory.”.
What makes the reinvention hit harder is Stuart’s original standing in the parent series. In “The Big Bang Theory. ” Stuart was a gloomy minor character who appeared in only 84 episodes throughout the show’s 12-season run. In each appearance. he served as comedic relief—sometimes landing a dark one-liner. sometimes delivering an awkward encounter that left viewers cringing.
This time, he’s the anchor.
The shift also lands after a franchise that has already shown a willingness to stretch into different eras. CBS previously took a deep dive into Sheldon’s upbringing with “Young Sheldon,” starring Iain Armitage. That series premiered in 2017 and ran for seven seasons, finishing with its finale in 2024. From “Young Sheldon. ” CBS pulled off another spin-off. “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. ” centered on Sheldon’s older brother Georgie (Montana Jordan) and his wife Mandy (Emily Osment). “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage” premiered in 2024 and is currently in production for Season 3.
“Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” is shaping up as something else entirely: rather than leaning on nostalgia through backward-looking stories. it’s moving toward the future and leaning into a multiverse sci-fi structure. The idea of transforming familiar characters into multiverse sci-fi figures—and reinventing returning fan favorites in bizarre new ways—has been positioned as the franchise’s most daring. out-of-the-box iteration yet. The genre and structure change are also expected to bring a new tone and rhythm. with the claim that it will be less formulaic than the previous shows.
Even with the gamble that comes with any spin-off. “The Big Bang Theory” has continued to expand its world even before the finale in 2019. using those spin-offs to keep the franchise alive. With two spin-off shows already in the rearview mirror. “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” is set to pull fans from the original series while introducing a new sci-fi edge—one longtime viewers may not have predicted from where Stuart once started.
