The sellout at Bell Centre didn’t just turn up the noise—it carried the Canadiens on their back the moment overtime started. Seconds in, Montreal captain Nick Suzuki was sprung on a partial breakaway attempt and fired, but the shot missed the net.

They had their chance. They had another one. And then the clock kept moving while the puck never once made its way onto the Hurricanes’ goaltender’s pads.

At 14:06 of overtime. Carolina forward Sebastian Aho deflected a shot from teammate Andrei Svechnikov past Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes. lifting the Hurricanes to a 3-2 victory in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final and sending Montreal home disappointed. The Canadiens now trail the series two games to one.

Even more damaging than the loss itself was how it played out at the end. Montreal finished the game with 12 shots on goal, and in overtime they failed to get a single puck on net—zero shots on goal in that extra period.

Just seconds into overtime, the Canadiens did threaten. Suzuki had the partial breakaway attempt but missed the net. Later, the Canadiens came an inch away from winning when defenseman Mike Matheson—who scored earlier in the game—rang a would-be goal off the iron.

But the numbers told the story the crowd couldn’t shake: no shots on goal for Montreal in overtime.

The scoring had already swung back and forth before it reached the extra frame. In the first period. Hurricanes veteran defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere opened the scoring with his first goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Montreal answered through Matheson, who scored his second playoff goal to level it.

Carolina regained the lead late in the period when Taylor Hall found the back of the net for his fourth goal, making it 2-1 for the Hurricanes heading toward the later stretches of the game.

Once again, Montreal responded—this time with the Calder Trophy winner from last season. Defenseman Lane Hutson scored to bring the Canadiens level.

In goal, Jakub Dobes was busy for Montreal, making 35 saves. Carolina’s Erik Andersen needed just 10 saves on the 12 shots he faced.

Game 4 between the Montreal Canadiens and the Carolina Hurricanes will be played on Wednesday evening.
