Stretchered off: Kone injury swings World Cup clash

Ismael Kone’s left-leg injury in Canada’s World Cup match triggered an escalating confrontation with a Qatar tackler, ending in a red card review, Qatar reduced to nine men, and Canada’s first-ever World Cup win—a 6-0 victory.
When Ismael Kone went down in Canada’s World Cup match, it wasn’t just the moment—it was the look on the pitch and the sound people feared. Kone was dribbling when Qatar’s Assim Madibo tried to steal from behind, swiping Kone’s leg and taking him down immediately.
Kone held his left leg near the ankle as trainers rushed in. By the time an air cast was placed on his left leg, the severity had become impossible to miss. He was wheeled off on a stretcher while waving to fans in Vancouver who were chanting his name.
The refereeing decision started with a yellow card. but the broadcast then captured Canada assistant coach Paul Stalteri yelling at the official: “His (expletive) leg’s hanging off. His leg’s hanging off. It’s a broken (expletive) leg. man.” A review followed. the yellow card was upgraded to red for serious foul play. and Madibo was ejected in the 53rd minute.
Madibo’s exit left Qatar down to nine men. The situation had already turned darker for the Qatar side earlier in the match. when Homam Ahmed was sent off in the 33rd minute. With Qatar now playing with two fewer players. Canada pushed forward and ultimately secured a 6-0 victory—the country’s first-ever World Cup win.
Kone told to undergo surgery after coach says he ‘could hear the bone snap’
After the match, Canada coach Jesse Marsch said he “could hear the bone snap.” Kone was at the hospital undergoing surgery.
The injury happened as Madibo attempted to steal the ball from behind. As Kone went down holding his left leg near the ankle, Madibo put his hands over his head and waved his hands in the air, offering an apology for the severity of the tackle.
The turn of the match followed the same path as the injury itself: immediate contact from behind. then an on-field judgment that shifted under review. A yellow card became a red after the referee watched the play again—then Qatar’s personnel situation worsened with the ejection. and Canada’s scoreline reflected the new reality on the pitch.
For Kone, the physical impact was paired with the human one: he was stretchered off, and he still waved to the crowd in Vancouver as he left the field.

Wtf that sounds brutal, like how do you even do that from behind.
So it was a yellow at first then they upgraded it? I mean once they “saw the bone” or whatever then yeah red makes sense. Also Canada finally winning in the World Cup is wild.
Wait I thought Qatar got the red for something else earlier? Like the Homam Ahmed one in the 33rd minute… seems like Canada just kept getting lucky with calls. But if he actually heard a bone snap then ok fair, can’t argue that.
That coach yelling “his leg’s hanging off” is insane, but broadcast always zooms in on the worst stuff. The tackle from behind… I feel like refs are either too soft or too harsh, no middle. Either way a 6-0 Canada win after two Qatari guys getting sent off… I’m guessing the second red basically broke them mentally. Hope Kone is good and can actually walk again.
