Stephen Miller Boasts Trump Boosted His Ego—Critics React

Stephen Miller, the White House deputy chief of staff tied to President Trump’s immigration agenda, told Fox News host Jesse Watters that his “intact ego” is secure and credited Trump-linked work for his self-confidence—prompting sharp backlash online.

Stephen Miller didn’t try to soften the message. On Wednesday, during a chuckle-filled exchange on Fox News, the White House deputy chief of staff leaned into the idea that his ego was doing just fine—and that working for President Trump was the reason.

When host Jesse Watters asked about his ego amid reports that Miller’s podcaster wife, Katie Miller, could land a deal for her show with Paramount, Miller responded with a grin visible in the exchange: “Don’t worry, I have a very, very secure, intact ego.”

He then turned the conversation into a pitch for why he feels that way. “Owing to the fact, Jesse, that thanks to my appearances on your show, I’ve never had a larger fan following. So your show has been great for my ego and self-esteem,” he said.

But the self-assessment didn’t end at television or attention. Miller pivoted to praise for Trump himself, arguing that the president’s workforce is automatically validated through confidence. “And most importantly of all. any man who works for President Trump is a man that is very. very strong and self-assured in his role. ” he said.

“There’s nothing better for your self-confidence than being able to work for President Trump, and that is a blessing I have every day,” Miller added.

Watters answered with a biting line of his own: “That’s right. If you don’t have it, he will turn you into a puddle of tears.”

After the clip circulated, critics took aim at what they saw as the message underneath Miller’s words. On social media, reactions ranged from disbelief about the need to proclaim confidence to accusations of groveling. One post asked, “Very strong and self-assured, eh?. Uhm, who is gonna tell him?” The commenter was Anthony M. Hopper (@elander777) on May 21, 2026.

Robert A. Koch (@RobertAKoch001) on the same day wrote about the alleged performance of confidence at official events, saying, “Yes, so manly when the grovel in front of him at every cabinet meeting.”

Others focused on what they perceived as insecurity disguised as strength. Steven Huerstel (@huerstel_steven) wrote, “Strong /self assured people don’t have to always tell everyone they are strong /self assured men. That’s what weak people do to try and convince others they’re strong.”

Terri dorsch (@usher81) reacted more bluntly: “Really? I just think they’re all cult level kiss asses.”

Fritznkappler (@Fritznkappler1) went further, posting, “So says one of the weakest, most insecure men in American history.”

Some commenters tied the exchange to the language Miller and others have used in politics—about independence and strength—then said the episode contradicted it. “Idk this sounds weirdly submissive for people who brand themselves as hyper-independent ‘alpha males’,” wrote Dana VanEffen (@DanaVanEffen906) on May 21, 2026.

GomJabbar (@gomjabbar88) called the admission embarrassing, saying, “If this is actually true you wouldn’t need to feel the need to say it out loud. Fucking embarrassing.”

Even those who framed it through crude wordplay kept returning to the same core point: if the confidence is real, they argue, it wouldn’t require such insistence. One user, D Villella (@dvillella), wrote, “Any man who works for TACO is weak and a coward.”

And Grace Alexander (@GraceAl38236563) summed up the tone of many posts with a simple reversal: “….said no one ever about Stephen Miller….”

For critics, the controversy wasn’t just that Miller praised the president. It was the way he paired that praise with an insistence that he personally carried “a very, very secure, intact ego,” then linked self-confidence directly to the act of serving Trump every day.
