Starmer orders tanker interception as Zelenskyy pressures Russia

Starmer orders – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he ordered U.K. armed forces to intercept a “shadow fleet” oil tanker in the English Channel, framing the move as pressure on Russia’s war effort. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised the decision, linking it
Keir Starmer didn’t wait for the next diplomatic briefing. In the early hours of Sunday, the British prime minister says he directed the U.K.’s armed forces to stop a “shadow fleet” oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel.
“In the early hours of this morning. I directed our Armed Forces to intercept a shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to pass through the English Channel. ” Starmer wrote on X. He called the operation “yet another blow to Russia” and framed it as a warning to those supporting President Vladimir Putin’s war effort. Starmer also thanked military personnel and law enforcement officials involved in the interception.
Across the Channel, Volodymyr Zelenskyy treated the move as more than a single interdiction. The Ukrainian president welcomed the interception, saying it showed “principled resolve” by Britain and would help curb Moscow’s oil revenues—revenues Zelenskyy said have fueled the conflict.
He pressed European governments to go further, urging them to take additional steps including detaining ships and confiscating cargo to increase economic pressure on Russia.
The interception landed as Zelenskyy laid out the pace of violence hitting Ukraine. He said hundreds of strikes have targeted Ukrainian cities and infrastructure in recent days, using drones, guided bombs and missiles. In his message, Zelenskyy called for stronger air defense, expanded military cooperation, and increased sanctions.
Zelenskyy also tied the military moment to an upcoming diplomatic calendar. “The G7, EU, and NATO summits are ahead,” he wrote, adding that the negotiations there need to produce concrete decisions.
The week’s push wasn’t limited to Europe’s security meetings, either. Zelenskyy said he had a detailed conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. He described the discussion as covering efforts to end the war, battlefield developments, and possible steps toward peace. The two leaders agreed to continue talks at the upcoming G7 summit. and Zelenskyy said they discussed “good ideas” aimed at protecting lives and advancing a resolution.
While the U.S. and Ukraine’s leadership calendars focused on talks in the coming days, the European Union moved on its own track. Ursula von der Leyen. the president of the European Commission. posted on social media that “tomorrow. Ukraine and Moldova will take a major step on their EU journey.” That conference is set for Monday in Luxembourg.
Zelenskyy’s message made the stakes feel immediate: attacks, sanctions, and diplomacy running on parallel tracks. Starmer’s interception, meanwhile, offered a sharp concrete lever—one Zelenskyy clearly wants used again, and faster.

So they intercepted an oil tanker… how is that not gonna start something?
I saw this on TikTok and everyone was saying Starmer is “doing something” but honestly idk. Shadow fleet oil tanker sounds made up?
Wait does this mean England is gonna board random ships now? Like, if it’s “shadow fleet” then who decides that, the UK? Zelenskyy praising him didn’t surprise me though, he always wants Europe to squeeze harder.
Every time they say “pressure Russia,” it just feels like the civilians get hit next. Also Zelenskyy mentioned drones and missiles like that’s supposed to calm people down? And what does confiscating cargo even mean, are they just stealing oil like… legally? idk man.
