FAA investigates Boston Logan go-around to avoid collision

Saturday morning at Boston Logan International Airport looked routine until the moment the runway picture changed. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a close call between two commercial flights that were in danger of colliding.

A Delta Air Lines flight from Dallas had to execute a go-around—an aborted landing—to avoid a possible collision with an American Airlines plane departing from an intersecting runway. The FAA and flight logs describe the situation this way.

The Delta crew coordinated with air traffic control to perform the go-around, an airline spokesperson said. Delta Flight 2351 carried 129 passengers and six crew members. After the maneuver, the plane landed safely and deplaned normally, according to the spokesperson.

American Airlines and the airport directed requests for comment to the FAA.

Go-arounds, the FAA says, are safe, routine procedures carried out at the discretion of the pilot or air traffic controllers.

The incident lands on a streak that has unsettled aviation watchers. On Saturday, a founder of a gaming company was killed in a plane crash in France. Earlier this week, a business jet crashed in Laredo, Texas, killing one person on board. On Monday. a B-52 crashed during a test flight at Edwards Air Force Base in California. killing all eight people aboard. And last Sunday, 12 people were killed when a plane on a skydiving outing in Missouri crashed.

The FAA’s investigation into what happened at Boston Logan is now the focus—starting with the moment when a landing turned into a go-around, and when coordination between a cockpit and air traffic control kept two paths from becoming one.

  1. I don’t get it. If they avoided the collision then why are we still investigating? Like maybe the American plane ran late or something.

  2. Go-arounds are “routine” but this always freaks me out because it’s always “intersecting runway” in these stories. Also they mentioned that Dallas flight… so is Dallas the cause? It sounds like blame roulette.

  3. Between this and all the other crashes listed (France, Texas, California, Missouri) it makes you think pilots are getting rushed or something. The FAA says it’s safe and routine but “close call” is still scary, like one wrong second and it’s over. Also intersecting runway… so was someone not paying attention or was the weather weird? idk.
