Spurs’ Mitch Johnson admits Game 5 errors vs Thunder

Spurs’ Mitch – San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson was blunt after a 127-114 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 5, pointing to poor positioning, coverage breakdowns, and decisions that left his team unable to crack OKC’s defense. With the series pushing toward
Two days after completely demolishing the Oklahoma City Thunder. the San Antonio Spurs tried to roll that momentum straight into Game 5. They started the way you’d expect from a team trying to change the series picture. taking advantage of an injured Oklahoma City team and sprinting ahead in the first quarter.
But the deeper the game went, the more that lead slipped away. San Antonio tried to fight its way into the match, yet it never found a way through Oklahoma City’s defense. The result was a 127-114 loss—one that felt more lopsided than the final margin even suggests.
Head coach Mitch Johnson was asked what went wrong, and his answer didn’t soften the message. “It just felt like it was a little bit of everything,” Johnson said. “We did not put ourselves in position enough to be successful in each possession. So. to beat a team of this caliber in their building with what’s on the stakes. we’ll need to be a lot better to give yourself a chance… There were a lot of things that we were just in wrong positions or wrong coverages or poor decisions. which I’ll go back and look at the film.”.
By halftime, the defending champions had seized control. Oklahoma City jumped out to an 11-point lead after a fierce second quarter. and while the Spurs never totally disappeared and Oklahoma City couldn’t blow the game open beyond that gap. San Antonio still couldn’t find any solid hold on their opponent throughout the contest.
The stars didn’t bail them out, either. Victor Wembanyama finished with 20 points on 4-of-15 shooting, while De’Aaron Fox managed just 9 points on 4-of-15. With those numbers, the Spurs had to overcome more than just Oklahoma City’s defense—and they couldn’t.
The series now leaves San Antonio on the brink of elimination. Game 6 will be played in San Antonio in front of their fans, but Johnson’s group will also need to win another game in Oklahoma City if it wants to reach the Finals.
That’s the tightrope facing these young Spurs: can they find another gear for one more push, or has the defending champions’ wear-and-tear across the series finally caught up with them?
And for Johnson, the plan is already set. He’ll go back and look at the film—because in his own words, it wasn’t one single problem. It was “a little bit of everything,” and it showed on both ends as the Spurs lost the one game they needed to keep control within reach.
