Spurs hold 2026 draft spot for UConn star

Spurs predicted – With the San Antonio Spurs entering the next stage of the Western Conference after 62 wins and the No. 2 seed, attention is already turning to June’s draft. An updated mock draft based on recent combine workouts and rumors suggests the Spurs could add another

San Antonio’s rise this past season still has the Western Conference feeling a little off-balance.. The Spurs rolled to 62 wins and the No.. 2 seed in the NBA Playoffs. and now they’re set for a second-round matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder. a team built through the NBA Draft and trades that brought MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Chet Holmgren. Jalen Williams. and Ajay Mitchell.

Even with the Thunder series on the near horizon. the Spurs’ draft position is already stirring conversations about what could come next.. The franchise has made moves that many view as quickly paying off: landing No.. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama three seasons ago. taking Stephon Castle in the 2024 NBA draft. and adding Dylan Harper in last year’s draft.. With those picks “all been clicking” and arriving earlier than anticipated. the Spurs’ momentum is part of why an upset in the WCF is being discussed.

San Antonio also holds several selections in June’s draft, beginning with the 20th and continuing through the 44th. That span includes the No. 20, No. 29, and No. 42 picks, giving the team room to find additional talent.

In a new mock draft updated around recent NBA Draft Combine workouts. results. and rumors. Alex Karaban—another UConn connection—is projected as a possible addition for the Spurs.. The projection places Karaban as San Antonio’s pick at No.. 35, with the case tied directly to combine performance.. The mock draft points to him leading all players in shooting drills. a result that would stand out immediately for teams searching for specific roster fit.

The same projection also leans on athletic improvement and résumé details.. Karaban’s vertical jump is noted as significantly improved compared to his previous combine two years ago.. The mock draft further highlights that he won two championships under Dan Hurley at UConn and competed for a third this past college basketball season. along with an emphasis on staying committed to improving his skills and helping his team across four years.

The idea of a second UConn star landing in San Antonio is built around timing and familiarity as much as talent.. If the Spurs were to add Karaban. he would join Castle. his former championship-winning teammate. who has already emerged as a young star in the NBA.. The fit would also be practical. with the Spurs not needing to force immediate playing time; the scenario described is one where development time—whether off the bench or potentially in the G League—remains an option while the team continues competing with the talent already on its roster.

There’s a clear through-line in how the Spurs are being evaluated: Wembanyama. Castle. and Harper were all acquired through recent drafts. the team’s current season success is linked to those moves. and the June draft slate that runs from No.. 20 through No.. 44 keeps the door open for another high-impact pick such as Karaban at No.. 35.

  1. Wait Spurs are holding a draft spot for 2026 like it’s guaranteed? I saw something about “Karaban” and thought that was a player already on the roster. Also how do they know combine workouts matter that much? Feel like rumors get made up.

  2. Alex Karaban to Spurs at 35?? Isn’t that like… pretty random. Shooting drills don’t mean he’ll do anything vs NBA defenses. But I guess if Wemby/ Castle/ whoever already “clicked” then fans want another safe pick. Still, Thunder are built from the draft so Spurs better not mess around.

  3. This is confusing because it says they’re in a Western Conference matchup soon but then talking about June’s draft? Like the draft is happening while the playoffs are going on? Also I saw “San Antonio’s rise” and it made me think they’re trading for MVP Shai already, which I know is probably not true. If they’re picking 20-44 that’s a lot of chances but mocks are always wrong anyway, right.
