Medic Treated for Rat Virus as Cruise Passengers Return

A MEDIC showing symptoms of the deadly rat virus is being treated in a specialist hospital in London. The healthcare worker was taken to the High Consequence Infectious Diseases unit in Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust on Saturday. It could be the first case of hantavirus in the UK since the outbreak began. The medic was brought to the UK for a “specialist assessment” after developing symptoms, described as a “highly precautionary measure” by the UKHSA. It comes as nine other Brits connected
to the MV Hondius cruise ship outbreak are set to arrive in the UK. The rest of the evacuees from St Helena and Ascension Island could have been exposed to hantavirus but do not have symptoms. They are expected to arrive in the UK on this evening, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said.
