Spider-Man has a future beyond Tom Holland — and Marvel is already planning for it
Tom Holland is back in Spider-Man for a fourth solo film, but the actor has said Marvel is already looking ahead to the franchise’s future.
Holland, whose new movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now in theaters, revealed that the studio has been working on a plan since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home to eventually pass the role to another actor.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 30-year-old said: “There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision [of] the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting. I know I get really excited when we have these meetings and chat about it. But that is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure.”
Holland has also spoken about wanting to introduce the character Miles Morales into the live-action films. Morales, a Black and Puerto Rican teenager who debuted in Marvel Comics in 2011, becomes Spider-Man alongside Peter Parker. He has since become the central character in the animated Spider-Verse movies, where he is voiced by Shameik Moore.
Holland said he hopes to help guide the next Spider-Man the way Robert Downey Jr. guided him after he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2016.
“It’s really complicated to talk about the future of Spider-Man,” he told the Associated Press. “I know that I love the character, I have big ambitions, I have things I want to achieve in the character, however long that will take, who knows?
“But I definitely have a desire to bring Miles Morales to the screen and to shepherd whoever the lucky young kid is that gets that job in the way that Robert Downey Jr. did for me. I think that would be a really awesome way to end my tenure as Spider-Man.”
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently confirmed the character is part of the studio’s long-term plans.
“The good news is, Sony has the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse series, which is very popular and excellent, and Beyond the Spider-Verse is coming out next year,” Feige told Chinese outlet Watching Hollywood, as quoted by Deadline.
“But yes, we definitely have plans [for a live-action Morales], and I think a live-action Spider-Man movie has this destiny: to add Miles sometime after the Spider-Verse series ends.”
