Red Sox’ Willson Contreras leaves game after scary HBP vs. Dodgers

Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras experienced a scary moment in the batter’s box on Friday night.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Will Klein hit Contreras squarely in the helmet with a 95-mile-per-hour four-seam fastball in the third inning, which ultimately took Contreras out of the game.

Klein narrowly missed hitting Contreras in the head area on his first pitch of the at-bat with the same pitch and speed. He was removed from the game by manager Dave Roberts after the hit by pitch.

Contreras, unsurprisingly, played it cool after getting hit. He remained in the game to take his base after appearing to tell interim manager Chad Tracy and a trainer that he was fine.

Contreras, an All-Star this year, was removed from the game defensively in the next half-inning. Nick Sogard moved from second base to first, and Anthony Seigler took over at second.

The Red Sox have proved to be resilient over the last month, but the team surely hopes Contreras is as healthy as he made himself seem to be after getting hit. He’s been Boston’s best and most consistent hitter this season, an unlikely offensive hero and leader after being traded to the Red Sox from the St. Louis Cardinals this past winter.
