Spencer Pratt Turns to GOP After Death Threats

Spencer Pratt says death threats tied to his reality fame led him to become a gun-owning Republican, pointing to carry concealed weapons and aligning with the party he believes supports that right. He made the comments ahead of the June 2 Los Angeles election,
Spencer Pratt didn’t sound like he was searching for a talking point when he answered why he’s a Republican. He framed it like a decision forced by fear—death threats, security advice, and a Los Angeles backdrop he called dangerous.
In an interview Thursday with CNN anchor Elex Michaelson on “The Story Is with Elex Michaelson,” Pratt said Michaelson was about to “break some news” before explaining that he has received “a ton of death threats” after becoming a once “hated reality star.”
Pratt described being advised by his security team to buy firearms. He and his wife, Heidi, then purchased guns for protection, saying they did so in order to keep themselves safe in “dangerous” Los Angeles.
The carry permits came next. Pratt said he needed “CCWs”—carry concealed weapons—and tied that need to politics. He said the Republican party supports CCWs, while “the Dems” do not.
Pratt’s takeaway was simple: he believed Republican support for gun ownership was what could keep his family protected. and that belief pushed him toward the party. His comments land as he continues his run for mayor in Los Angeles, where he is challenging current L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, L.A. City Council member Nithya Raman, and several other candidates. The election is scheduled for June 2.
The sequence of his explanation is tight: a period of receiving death threats. security telling him to buy firearms. the move toward concealed carry through “CCWs. ” and then the conclusion that party alignment mattered for his safety. For Pratt, the politics didn’t arrive first—it followed the threats and the protective steps that came after.
