Spain coach calls Cape Verde ‘inferior’ after 0-0

Spain coach – Spain avoided a major opening stumble at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by holding Cape Verde to a 0-0 draw in Atlanta, even as coach Luis de la Fuente dismissed the opponent as “inferior.” The Group H match left the group in a four-way tie after Saudi Arabia and Uru
Spain’s World Cup opener didn’t crash the tournament hopes they carried into Atlanta—yet it did everything that makes a first night linger.
In front of 67,640 fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Spain played Cape Verde to a 0-0 draw in Group H on Monday, with the match score frozen and both teams forced to settle for a point. For Cape Verde, goalkeeper Vozinha stood out immediately, making seven saves to keep Spain from breaking through.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente left the post-match questions with a blunt message. When speaking to reporters after the match, he called Cape Verde “inferior,” while also crediting them for what they did right.
“In this World Cup there’s extreme equality and difficulty,” De La Fuente said via ESPN. “This team was clearly inferior to us, but they did the things they had to do well.”
He didn’t try to sugarcoat the performance, but he framed it as part of a longer grind. “We have to keep growing. With the talent these players have, that’s the way. We’re calm. This is a long tournament, and in our heads we’ve still got seven games left.”
Spain will get its next chance on Sunday against Saudi Arabia. De la Fuente insisted the team will be ready.
“This (Spain) team is reliable, whatever happens,” he said. “We’re a team with an extraordinary reliability. We haven’t lost in 32 matches. We’ll be better in the next game, for sure.”
The draw didn’t just stall Spain—it also tightened the group picture. After Monday’s opening round, Group H is in a four-way tie. Saudi Arabia and Uruguay finished their match 1-1 on Monday, leaving multiple teams level after the first set of results.
The tone of Monday wasn’t confined to Spain. Belgium also struggled early, coming back in the second half to tie Egypt before finishing 1-1.
For Spain, though, the 0-0 with Cape Verde carried extra weight. Entering the tournament, Spain was ranked No. 3 in the world FIFA rankings, making the failure to score against a team making its first World Cup appearance the kind of moment that fans remember on the drive home.
And for Cape Verde, the story had a clear hero: seven saves from Vozinha, and a match that ended without a goal despite Spain’s status and expectations.

“Inferior”??? Bro they couldn’t even score. That’s wild.
I didn’t watch but the headline says 0-0 and that goalkeeper had 7 saves so yeah Spain clearly played like they didn’t care. Coach talking big after a tie always feels dumb, like say it before the match or don’t say it at all.
Spain is still ranked like #3 but they’re acting like it’s all part of the plan. Meanwhile Cape Verde making its first World Cup and still shutting them down?? Either Spain’s overrated or that goalie was on another level. Also four-way tie sounds confusing, I’m just gonna check highlights lol.
Why are they calling a team inferior when they literally got the same result. Sounds like the coach is trying to cover up the offense. And 67k fans at Mercedes-Benz like that’s gonna make the ball magically go in the net, right? Next Sunday vs Saudi Arabia… okay but if they keep doing this they might need a whole new game plan.
