SpaceX wins $6.45B Space Force contracts before IPO

On a Friday that looks like a warm-up act for what comes next, SpaceX received another major vote of confidence from the U.S. Space Force—money that, taken together, totals $6.45 billion and lands days before the company is expected to launch what may be the largest IPO ever.

The Space Force announced it will give SpaceX $4.16 billion as part of a contract to build satellites that will be part of a missile and air defense system President Trump is calling the “Golden Dome.”

The timing matters. Just earlier this week, the Space Force awarded SpaceX a separate contract worth $2.29 billion. That deal involves SpaceX building a communications network in low Earth orbit.

The new awards come as SpaceX prepares for an IPO expected next month, a moment the company has framed as a milestone while still relying heavily on the government work that keeps the rockets and satellites moving.

SpaceX’s IPO filing, made public last week, laid out that dependency plainly. It detailed that the company is heavily dependent on government contracts, with one-fifth of SpaceX’s revenue in 2025 coming from government agencies.

SpaceX’s relationship with the administration is also part of the backdrop. Elon Musk poured around $300 million into helping elect Trump and has remained close with the president. Even so, the government’s decision-making isn’t only political. Over the last decade, SpaceX has dominated the launch market, making it a default option for federal space efforts.

In its IPO filing, SpaceX acknowledged the risk that comes with that reliance. It warned investors that its “business with governmental entities is subject to changes in policies, priorities, regulations, mandates, andfunding levels.”

Taken side by side, the picture is clear: the Space Force is pushing billions toward SpaceX right as the company gears up to go public—while the company itself is warning shareholders that government support can shift, sometimes quickly, with political and budget realities.
