South African MP arrested over fraud and obstruction: Misryoum

Misryoum reports Fadiel Adams was arrested in Cape Town over alleged fraud and obstruction tied to an investigation into a 2017 murder.

A South African MP at the center of a sensitive police investigation has been arrested in Cape Town, and the allegations go beyond a single case.

Fadiel Adams, a National Colored Congress leader and MP, was taken into custody after police said he faces charges of fraud and defeating or obstructing the course of justice.. Misryoum reports the matter is linked to claims that Adams interfered with an investigation into the 2017 killing of ANC Youth League figure Sindiso Magaqa.

Police say Adams was told by the Political Killings Task Team to report to his nearest police station in connection with the charges. Misryoum understands he handed himself over at Parliament Village, after which officers arrested him.

This case matters because interference allegations, especially in investigations connected to political violence, can quickly become a test of public trust in the justice process.

Officials said a warrant was issued for Adams’ arrest and that it relates to “serious allegations” involving alleged interference in ongoing work around Magaqa’s murder. Police also said investigators found Adams allegedly interfered with a convicted hitman when the probe was at an advanced stage.

Earlier, Adams had publicly accused police structures of wrongdoing while the matter played out.. Misryoum reports he alleged that task team members raided a property he used to own in the Cape Town area and claimed officers did not produce a search or arrest warrant.. He also alleged that officers pointed rifles at people during what he described as an incorrect search.

He maintained that he had sold the property weeks earlier and no longer lived there. Adams also said he opened a case related to intimidation and alleged the raid was orchestrated by the acting national police commissioner.

Adams further addressed other claims, including allegations that he used a blue-light escort to travel to Westville Prison for an interaction connected to the case.. Misryoum reports that he said he was escorted by metro police while carrying out official duties to interview the convicted killer, who he claimed was prepared to testify.

Misryoum was told police have not publicly responded to Adams’ claims made during earlier statements. Meanwhile, the focus remains on whether the obstruction and fraud allegations can be proven in court.

The arrest is likely to keep attention on how investigations are handled and documented, particularly when accused interference could affect evidence, witnesses, or the timeline of prosecutions.
