Sorkin Tried Hard, Eisenberg Still Refused Zuckerberg

Jesse Eisenberg is staying away from Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, and Sorkin says he spent three days trying to bring him back. The actor reportedly doesn’t want to be tied to Mark Zuckerberg anymore—especially after issues he’s raised before about the

Jesse Eisenberg didn’t just pass on a role. He made it clear he didn’t want to step back into Mark Zuckerberg’s skin for Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning.

Sorkin is returning as writer and director for the follow-up to The Social Network. and the recasting shocked many viewers—Succession star Jeremy Strong taking over the part. But the reason behind Eisenberg’s absence has been laid out by Sorkin himself. and it centers on the actor’s refusal to be permanently linked to the real-life tech CEO.

Sorkin said he spent three days trying to get Eisenberg to return. “I felt like it belonged to him, and he was certainly battle-tested,” Sorkin told Vanity Fair. “He simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore, that he has his problems with the guy.”

Sorkin added that Eisenberg doesn’t like the way strangers approach him in public as a result of his association with Zuckerberg. Eisenberg, Sorkin said, “doesn’t like kids coming up to him in airports with business cards that say ‘I’m CEO, bitch’ for him to sign.”

The story behind the handoff also has a timestamp. Vanity Fair reports that Sorkin first tried to get Eisenberg into the project at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party. where he asked Eisenberg to read the script. “Just a few minutes later. at that same party. he ran into Jeremy Strong. who asked Sorkin what he had been up to. and Sorkin told him about the script. Strong indicated that if Eisenberg wasn’t interested, he would.”.

Eisenberg has spoken about this discomfort before. He discussed his distaste for being associated with Zuckerberg in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today. saying. “It’s not like I played a great golfer or something and now people think I’m a great golfer. It’s like this guy that’s doing things that are problematic — taking away fact-checking and safety concerns. making people who are already threatened in this world more threatened.”.

With The Social Reckoning now moving forward with Jeremy Strong in the role. the movie is set for theaters on October 9. 2026. A teaser trailer is also available. but the question fans have been asking since the casting shift is now answered from the inside: Eisenberg wasn’t interested in returning to a character that—fair or not—people keep treating like a real-world Zuckerberg connection.

  1. Jeremy Strong taking over sounds like a ratings move. Like why would any actor want the “CEO, bitch” airport stuff if it’s actually happening.

  2. Wait I thought Eisenberg DID still want it but Sorkin recast him because of the Oscar party thing? If someone told me to read a script at a party I’d probably forget it by lunch so idk.

  3. This whole thing is kinda funny to me because it’s like, you act as a famous person and then act surprised. But I guess when people in airports are actually intense with business cards… that’s not a vibe. Also Zuckerberg stuff aside, the movie being October 9, 2026 makes it feel super far away like it’ll change again anyway.
