Sony to stop making PlayStation physical discs by 2028

Sony stops – Sony says it will end physical disc production for PlayStation consoles and move fully digital starting January 2028. New games after that point will be available exclusively via the PlayStation Store and at retailers, while titles already released on disc—or

For years, PlayStation boxes have carried the promise of a game you could hold. Starting in January 2028, that promise is set to change—and Sony is pulling the plug on the discs that made it possible.

Sony said on Wednesday it is discontinuing physical discs for its PlayStation video game consoles and going fully digital beginning in January 2028. After physical disk production ends. new games will be available exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store. as well as at retailers. Sony also said the shift will not affect games that have already been released on disc. or those that will be released before January 2028.

The company frames the move as a response to where its players are already heading. “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. ” Sony said in a statement. “This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”.

Sony’s roots reach back well before PlayStation, to Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K.K, founded in 1946 in Japan. It produced the first PlayStation in 1994—a gray console equipped with a CD-ROM drive. Since then, it has released several PlayStation generations, with the PlayStation 5 currently the most recent model.

The timing comes as major releases continue to move through an increasingly digital-forward market. The announcement arrives ahead of the digital-only release of Grand Theft Auto VI. commonly referred to as GTA 6. which analysts expect will be the most lucrative entertainment industry launch ever. Fans have been waiting for the game for over a decade since the last main entry, GTA 5, was released in 2013. The launch date for GTA 6 has already been pushed a few times. and the game is now expected to be released on Nov. 19.

The decision also lands during a clear economic shift away from physical media. As digital offerings increase, many consumers are moving away from physical games. Video game players spent $1.5 billion in 2025 on new physical video games. the lowest amount since market research firm Circana began tracking the metric in 1995. according to Mat Piscatella. the senior director and video game industry advisor at Circana. Piscatella said spending on physical games peaked at $11.6 billion in 2008.

There’s a straightforward sequence in these numbers and this timeline: fewer buyers are paying for physical copies. and Sony says it is responding by ending the production that supports new disc-based releases after January 2028. For players. the question becomes less about what’s coming next and more about what changes in between—what they can buy. how they store it. and what happens to the “ownership” feeling that physical media has long carried.

  1. I don’t get it, my cousin still buys discs at Walmart. If everything’s digital in 2028 does that mean the used game market dies?? Seems like they just hate people owning stuff.

  2. Wait… if they stop making discs, how’s GTA 6 gonna work? Like are they gonna mail everyone a disc later or what. Also I swear I saw somewhere that digital licenses disappear if your internet is down which feels illegal.

  3. Good for them I guess but I’m already tired of buying the same game twice. People act like discs are “old tech” but at least you can resell them or bring to a friend. January 2028 sounds so far away yet I feel like it’ll happen tomorrow… also are they still gonna sell at retailers or is it gonna be like codes on paper??
