Sony lifts PS Plus monthly rates for new members

Sony raises – Starting May 20, Sony will raise PlayStation Plus prices for new customers in select regions. The Essential one-month rate increases by $1 to $11, and the three-month rate rises by $3 to $28, with Sony citing “ongoing market conditions.” Annual plans aren’t me
On May 20, new PlayStation Plus subscribers will pay more to jump into Sony’s monthly game library—an extra line item that hits right when players are already weighing the cost of getting into the ecosystem.
Sony has raised prices for PlayStation Plus for select regions. The Essential tier’s one-month subscription will now cost $11 per month, up $1 from the previous price. A three-month subscription also increases by $3, moving to $28.
The change is also reflected in regional pricing. Starting May 20, PlayStation Plus prices for new customers will start at $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP for one-month subscriptions, and $27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP for three-month subscriptions.
Sony says the increase is due to “ongoing market conditions.” The company’s post announcing the update says the new pricing applies to new subscribers, with the note that this only impacts new customers except in Turkey and India.
What isn’t explicitly nailed down is the full scope across subscription tiers. The wording of Sony’s announcement suggests that the Extra and Premium tiers may also be impacted, not just Essential. In the announcement, Sony only directly mentions the one- and three-month plans.
Annual subscribers appear to be off the hook for now. There’s no mention of annual plan pricing increasing in this announcement, though it’s not the first time Sony has moved those numbers. The company raised annual plans by as much as $40 in 2023.
For players, the timing is harder to ignore.. A $1 increase on monthly PS Plus pricing may sound modest. but the bigger picture is the cost of access to the platform in the first place.. A standard PS5 with a disc drive now costs $650—an entry price that makes even small recurring increases feel like pressure.
Sony isn’t the only company adjusting subscriptions in the background. Microsoft recently raised prices of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to $30 per month, a move that annoyed many players. Microsoft’s new Microsoft Gaming CEO, Asha Sharma, then reversed course.
Sony’s announcement doesn’t say what comes next. Engadget reached out to Sony for clarification and said it would update if it hears back.

So basically if you want to play online you’re paying more again. Love that.
“Ongoing market conditions” lol. It’s always that when they mean “we need more money.” $1 here $3 there… next thing you know it’s like $40 a month.
Wait this is only for new members, right? But then why do they say it hits right when people are weighing the cost, like it affects everyone. I’m so confused. Also I thought the annual stuff was definitely going up, guess not? Sony wording is always weird.
I swear they do this right after they push some “must have” update. $10.99 is basically $11, same thing. Meanwhile Microsoft did the whole Game Pass thing and then reversed it like 2 days later so Sony should do that too. I’m not paying extra just to stream games and save my progress.
