Trump blasts Cassidy as disloyal disaster in Truth Social

Trump calls – President Donald Trump escalated his feud with GOP Sen. Bill Cassidy, calling him a “disloyal disaster,” a “sleazebag,” and “a terrible guy” while declaring he is “BAD FOR LOUISIANA” after Cassidy fell short in a three-way GOP primary.
For the third straight time, the feud played out on Trump’s favorite stage: his Truth Social account.
On Saturday, May 16, President Donald Trump posted sharply against GOP Sen.. Bill Cassidy. describing him as a “disloyal disaster. ” a “sleazebag” and “a terrible guy. ” while claiming Cassidy is “BAD FOR LOUISIANA.” The attack landed amid a bruising Louisiana primary fight that Cassidy ultimately lost after polls showed him trailing Trump-backed opponents.
Trump wrote that Cassidy’s political story changed once he got what he wanted.. In the post. Trump argued that Cassidy built earlier campaigns on support for Trump before “turn[ing] around and [vot[ing]] to IMPEACH me” after winning—an action Trump framed as having now been proven to be “total ‘bulls***!’”
“He knew that at the time, but didn’t care,” Trump added, tying his anger directly to Cassidy’s 2021 vote to convict him in his second impeachment trial. For Trump, it wasn’t just a policy disagreement—it was loyalty broken.
In the same Truth Social post. Trump pressed on Cassidy’s character and accused him of misleading voters during his earlier campaigns.. Trump called out Cassidy again on personality and trust. writing that he is “a sleazebag” and “a terrible guy. ” and repeating that Cassidy is “BAD FOR LOUISIANA.” Trump also pointed to his own record in the state. writing. “I LOVE LOUISIANA. won it all three times. and got the most votes in its history. by far.”
The political math around Cassidy only added heat.. Cassidy, a two-term incumbent, polled third in the Republican primary for his Louisiana Senate seat.. A Quantus Insights survey conducted between May 6 and 7 showed Trump-endorsed Rep.. Julia Letlow leading with 42%, followed by Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming at 30% and Cassidy at 20%.
Trump didn’t hide his preference in the race. He openly backed Letlow, writing, “VOTE TODAY FOR JULIA L. She Is a winner who will NEVER let you down,” and predicted Cassidy would be “CLOBBERED.”
Cassidy’s defeat capped a series of moves meant to reset his relationship with Trump-aligned politics.. He had defended his 2021 impeachment vote. saying. “I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty.” During the 2024 election cycle. Cassidy also criticized Trump’s immigration rhetoric as “dehumanizing. ” saying it “reflected poorly” on the country. and warning that Trump’s communication style often “walks up to the edge.”
Later, Cassidy attempted to realign with Trump-friendly priorities by supporting controversial nominees such as Robert F.. Kennedy Jr.. for Health and Human Services Secretary and by backing Trump’s controversial tariffs.. But Trump’s latest post suggests those efforts were not enough to restore the trust he wanted.
The sequence is stark: Cassidy voted to convict Trump in 2021. later criticized Trump’s rhetoric and communication. then tried to realign through other political moves—and now. with Cassidy trailing in the primary and falling short. Trump has returned to the same language of betrayal. calling him not just wrong. but disloyal.
