Sony ends PlayStation disc releases after January 2028

digital-only PlayStation – Sony has announced that new PlayStation titles will stop coming out on disc starting in January 2028, shifting future releases to digital-only purchases through the PlayStation Store or retailers. Existing disc games and current consoles won’t lose disc suppor
For PlayStation players who still buy games as physical boxes—something you can stack on a shelf, lend, or resell—January 2028 is the date to circle.
Sony has announced it is shutting down physical releases for PlayStation titles. Starting in January 2028, new games released on PlayStation consoles will no longer be available on disc. After that point, everything will be digital-only, whether you purchase it from the PlayStation Store or from a retailer.
Sony frames the move as a response to where players have already been heading. “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” the company said.
That doesn’t mean discs disappear overnight. For now, existing PlayStation disc copies aren’t going away immediately. Any game releasing before January 2028—especially those that already had a disc version planned—will still get a physical release.
Your physical PlayStation collection also isn’t being erased. There’s no indication that current PlayStation consoles will lose the ability to play game discs.
What is ending is the production of new physical discs for new titles. Games launching after January 2028 simply won’t have a disc option.
The decision won’t exactly feel like a surprise to anyone who’s watched Sony’s hardware shifts over the past few years. Sony introduced the all-digital PS5 in 2020. followed by the disc-free PS5 Slim in 2023. and then the PS5 Pro without a disc drive in 2025. Each launch quietly pointed to the same direction—fewer reasons to keep physical media in the spotlight.
As the market moved further into digital, practical problems for discs only grew. Steam helped normalize digital purchasing. and as game file sizes expanded beyond the 100GB threshold. shipping games across multiple discs became harder—especially in physical bundles. At the same time, expansions and additional content increasingly pushed players toward digital downloads.
Studios with larger budgets can absorb disc production costs more easily. but for indies the path can be tougher. even with games often priced at $70–80. And then subscriptions and streaming changed the whole purchase mindset: services such as Xbox Game Pass and cloud-based streaming chipped away at the idea of buying digital copies outright.
The end of new disc production after January 2028 closes a chapter that had already been shrinking for years. For players who want discs for future releases, the window is narrowing fast. For everyone else. the message from Sony is straightforward: starting in 2028. the shelf won’t get new boxes—only new downloads.

So basically they’re trying to delete my ability to own stuff. cool cool.
I get that people download games now but disc games are literally cheaper sometimes. also what happens if the servers go down??
Wait, I thought they were ending disc *support* for current consoles too? Like my buddy said his disc PS5 won’t even read them after 2028. Maybe that’s fake news but idk.
January 2028… guess I should panic-buy a bunch of games now? I mean they say current consoles still play discs, but Sony always changes things later. I swear every “it won’t go away overnight” turns into “actually it did” in like 2 years. Also I hate that it’s all tied to the store, like I don’t want to rebuy the same game if something gets removed.
