Ruben Amorim breaks AC Milan record for Gonçalo Ramos

AC Milan have confirmed Gonçalo Ramos’ record-breaking move from Paris Saint-Germain for €74 million, smashing the club’s previous transfer record set in 2019. The signing lands as Ruben Amorim begins his first Milan transfer window, with more Old Trafford-lin

By the time Gonçalo Ramos’ name was officially attached to an AC Milan deal, it wasn’t just another transfer announcement—it was a statement with a price tag big enough to rewrite the club’s own history.

The Rossoneri confirmed the record-breaking signing of the 24-year-old forward from Paris Saint-Germain. Ramos completed a €74 million ($84 million) transfer, demolishing the club’s previous record of €49.5 million ($56.5 million) set in 2019, when AC Milan welcomed Rafael Leão from Lille.

Leão, however, may not be around to share the spotlight. The winger announced his intention to start a new chapter of his career outside of Italy.

Ramos is now set to become the attacking focal point for AC Milan for the foreseeable future. The forward has signed a contract through June 2031. He is also representing Portugal at the 2026 World Cup, turning his move into something that runs in parallel with international commitments.

The signing is already being treated as the first real marker of Ruben Amorim’s era at Milan. Some had expected a player from Manchester United to be the opening act, but the club’s record spend is on Ramos instead—at least for now.

AC Milan’s need for a reset is not subtle. The club are coming off another lackluster season under Massimiliano Allegri. with Sporting director Igli Tare. chief executive Giorgio Furlani and technical director Geoffrey Moncada all losing their jobs. Milan finished fifth in Serie A. missing the Champions League places on the final day of the 2025-26 season after a poor 2–1 defeat to Cagliari. Milan then settled for the Europa League next season—far below the standards set in earlier years.

The pattern many fans have pinned their hopes to is familiar: inconsistency in attack.

Christian Pulisic had a poor second half of last season at AC Milan. He got off to a blistering start, but did not find the back of the net in 2026. Leão was not much better, scoring just four goals after the calendar flipped. Christopher Nkunku ended his season with eight goals. Ramos, in contrast, arrives with a résumé built for expectation.

At Paris Saint-Germain, Ramos scored 45 goals in 131 appearances. He helped the club win three Ligue 1 titles and two Champions League titles. He also fits the kind of profile Amorim appears to be chasing: a fresh front-man who can carry the attack when games demand more.

It wasn’t that Ramos didn’t have reasons to be ready. It was that minutes were hard to come by at PSG, where the dominant front line included Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué. Now, on a new team in a new league, the 24-year-old has a chance to put together a breakout campaign.

The summer doesn’t end with Ramos, either. Ramos’ deal is described as the first signing of the period under Amorim, who signed a two-year contract with the club in June.

And talk about Old Trafford connections is still very much alive. Italian journalist Antonio Vitiello claimed Amorim is “crazy” about Lisandro Martínez and Sporting Lisbon’s Gonçalo Inácio. with the manager hoping to sign one of the defenders and talks already started. Martínez has one year left on his United contract before he can become a free agent next summer.

For Manchester United, the timing is sharp. Martínez’s time at Old Trafford has been marred by injuries. He made 45 appearances in his debut campaign, but then managed only 65 in his next three seasons combined. An ACL injury in 2024–25 limited his impact. and yet he remains a vital part of Michael Carrick’s defense when he is healthy.

United have the option to extend Martínez’s contract for another season if they want to keep him out of Amorim’s reach, but no moves have been made as of yet.

Across Milan, the message is already clear: this is not a waiting game. Amorim’s first headline transfer breaks the club’s spending record. and in a season that ended with fifth place and a slide out of the Champions League. that kind of move reads like an answer to the same question—how quickly can this attack stop being unreliable?.

  1. So Rafael Leao is probably leaving right? Like they paid all this money for Ramos and then Leao just ducks out lol. Also Ruben Amorim first window already, seems like a gamble.

  2. Wait I thought Ruben Amorim was at Man United? The article says some expected a player from Manchester United to be the opening act but then they dropped 74m on Ramos from PSG. Idk what’s true anymore. If Leao leaves then Milan is just gonna collapse on the wings too.

  3. I don’t get the point of “record-breaking” unless it wins Champions League. They finished fifth and missed the UCL after losing to Cagliari, so paying €74m for a forward feels like rearranging deck chairs. But hey, contract through 2031 sounds scary long, so if it flops they’re stuck.
