Sony Defends Xperia AI Camera Assistant Features

Sony is pushing back against the criticism that its AI Camera Assistant for the Xperia 1 XIII is doing more than it should.
The company drew unwanted attention after posting a demonstration of the feature on the Xperia 1 XIII.. In its latest clarification, Sony says the AI Camera Assistant doesn’t edit photos.. Instead, it provides suggestions that are meant to respond to what the camera is seeing—lighting, depth, and the subject.
Sony’s explanation is simple: point the camera at something, and the assistant will present four options.. Those options are focused on adjustments to exposure, color, and background blur.. In a product video. Sony also claims the assistant will suggest “the most photogenic angle. ” a line that became part of the controversy—because the clip shown in the video only appears to demonstrate it prompting a person to zoom in. which isn’t the same as suggesting an actual camera angle.
To back up the feature, Sony posted examples on X. The company’s newer posts are said to be better than what it put up on May 14th, but they’re still generating trouble. In the examples, the suggestions displayed in a grid below each show noticeable problems when compared to the original shot.
Suggestion one is described as being way too saturated. Suggestion two is criticized as flat and over-processed. Suggestion three is said to make it look like the food has been Photoshopped into the frame. Suggestion four’s contrast is described as cranked way too high.
The pattern across Sony’s own four-option demonstrations is consistent: each grid choice targets exposure. color. or background blur. yet every option shown ends up looking worse than the original in at least one of those areas—saturation. flatness. obvious compositing-like effects. or exaggerated contrast.
For anyone using an Xperia 1 XIII, the practical advice coming out of this back-and-forth is blunt: ignore the AI Camera Assistant’s suggestions for now.
