Skip Bayless doubles down after false Fever firing claim

A false report landed, it spread fast, and then the pushback came just as quickly. On Sunday, sports commentator Skip Bayless was called out by WNBA reporters after making a claim that the Indiana Fever had already fired coach Stephanie White following repeated spats with guard Caitlin Clark.

Within hours, the basketball world did what it does when a rumor doesn’t match reality: it checked. ESPN’s Alexa Philippou and The Indianapolis Star’s Chloe Peterson moved to refute the post, stressing that White is still with the Fever, a point also confirmed by the team itself.

Bayless didn’t delete his initial message. Instead, the 74-year-old tried to pivot. On X, he wrote: “Now they’re saying reports are erroneous about Stephanie White. But the point is. she won’t last much longer clashing during games with CAITLIN CLARK. even if her issues with Caitlin are mostly valid.”.

As of the time of writing, his original post still remained.

For Fever fans. it wasn’t just the substance of the claim—it was the decision not to correct it cleanly. Commenters kept coming back to sourcing and responsibility. One account wrote: “In other words, your journalistic report was completely erroneous. There. Fixed it!” Others pushed harder: “No. the point is you took something you saw on a KNOWN troll account and posted it as fact. ” and another said. “So you aren’t going to own that you had bad sourcing or were just wrong?. That’s typical Skip.”.

Some replies focused on what White’s situation actually means in-season. “Shut up!. You lied about her (White). If she gets fired at some point. it’ll be because she’s trying to hold a cone on defense accountable. ” one user claimed. Another urged a straightforward approach: “STFU and do some fact-checking just ONCE instead of running your mouth. I know you’re click-baiting, and it worked, but it’s so tired,” according to @scorpiock8.

While Bayless’ posts played out online. the Fever’s real work has been on the court—and it hasn’t been smooth. Indiana has dropped to a 4-3 record after losing back-to-back games to the Portland Fire and the Golden State Valkyries. In the loss to Portland, Clark was held to a season-low six points on 1-of-7 shooting.

Still, there is urgency without panic in the way the Fever’s season has been shaped so far. The team has plenty of time to recover and mount a run. Last season, White led Indiana to the semifinals even with Clark limited to just 13 games due to various injuries. The Fever were also just a win away from advancing to the WNBA Finals.

The next test arrives quickly. The Fever will host the Atlanta Dream at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Thursday.
