West Boca Raton, winners of back-to-back state titles in Class 6A in Florida, took the next step in their status as a national power.
A high school coach in Simi Valley was fired after an incident during a practice session.
Before Royal (California) High School started the season, it was announced that Adam Brubaker would no longer continue as the school’s head coach.
Brubaker was seen in a video being upset with some of his players before kicking a football on the field. The ball he kicked hit a player in the groin and he was visibly in pain.
“I kicked the ball and it hit him in the groin area and instantly I felt like I was going to pass out,” Brubaker told ABC7. “I feel obviously a great deal of remorse for what happened. It’s a one in a million shot.”
Brubaker also told ABC7 that he apologized to the player after the practice.
The decision to fire Brubaker was made by the Simi Valley Unified School District. His name is not listed among the coaches on the MaxPreps website.
Assistant coach Cody MacArthur served as acting head coach, according to the Ventura County Star.
On Friday, Aug. 21, Royal earned a 62-0 victory over Monroe of North Hills, with offensive coordinator Sean Bridgewater handling the play-calling duties for the Highlanders.
Quarterback Preston Murray threw two touchdown passes in the win.
“Obviously going into the game we had a bunch of nerves,” Murray told the VC Star. “The players played great. We were loose. We had fun. We executed everything.”
Royal will travel to play Carpinteria this week. It remains unclear who will be tabbed as the interim coach for the rest of the season.
